Strange Engine Sound - Toyota Yaris Forums

Hello everybody :)

When in 1st/2nd gear, sometimes the engine starts screetching really loud, especially when I press down the clutch, and at the same time I feel a slight vibration in the gear shift, as if something big is rubbing somewhere against it. I thought it was happening when I turn on air conditioning, but it also happens when air conditioning is off. The mechanic changed the water pump, and it did seem a bit loose, but after a few days the sound was back. I was told it could also be the alternator, but I have no other issues with electrical supply.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? Any ideas what it could be?

Timing chain tensioner is my guess

1st thing to do is remove belt & see if noise is gone.
