new yaris?

does this apply to recently purchased yarii too? i just got mine 2 weeks ago and i'm wondering if they would have replaced the part on their own by now. and how bad is the smell? so far i haven't been able to smell anything, but i haven't been in any real stop and go traffic yet.

As for the cause of this bad smell, I though I had posted thins before, but this is what I noticed, as I have a basic AFR (air-fuel ratio) meter.

When you drive normally, the ECU keeps the AFR oscillating around the standard 14.7:1, going lean-rich-lean-rich... This, apparently, is to enhance the efficiency of the catalyser.

But, when you step on it, the ECU seems to make the AFR very rich, I've seen it go up to 11:1, and stay there, which is a lot of fuel, a lot of which will go unburned, and this seems to mess with the stock catalyser, hence causing this smell. The theory behind this extra fuel is that it will help in keeping the engine cool and prevent detonation, as would be done when you have a turbo, so it's really a safety measure for engine longevity.

I guess the new catalyser is better able to contain or process this extra fuel so that it does not cause the stink...

I don't know if this TSB is also available here, never bothered to check... I just let off the accelerator a little when I see this extra-rich AFR...

I am having the same problem (didn't know this thread existed cuz i'm a dumbass). I just called the services department of my dealer. I specifically said, "excessive sulfur odor" and right away the dude said, "Bring it in tomorrow so we can have a look at it." I didn't say I had a print out of the TSB so I'm sort of curious on how they will handle this. If they give me ANY crap I'm going to whip out the print out and be all, "SUCKAH!"

So, I'll let you guys know.

i think there is a strange sulfur smell on mine but i don't sniff sulfur on a regular basis so cannot be completely sure. Just that there is a strange smell. so do I just go to the dealer to fix this?

'07 Hatch here. No smells, 36-38mpg driving 50/50 highway/city (well over posted limits-lol) with the A/C pumping. So far so good. About 7 months old and 5100 miles on it. Chris

Went to the dealer last month with TSB print-out and they ordered the part. No questions asked. Called me back after a week and replaced the catalytic converter in less than an hour. However, I can still smell it sometimes. Less often than usual but it still happens. Before, it usually occurs in the first 3 minutes when I start the car. Now it smells less often and when Im about 10 minutes driving. Still observing. If it doesn't go away completely I will go back to my dealer.

So I went to the dealer and dude crawled under my car and said it was a plastic bag that had melted to my whatever-it's-called. I didn't believe him so I crawled under there with him and told him to show it to me. Sure enough, he was able to scrap a bit of it off with his ink pen. I asked him what I should do and he said either let it burn off by itself or take it to a "car wash" to have them scrap it off for me.

I then showed him the printed out TSB and he said that wasn't on "all" 2007 Liftbacks, just some. I told him I wanted it changed anyway and he said they could evaluate it (whatever that means) and if they don't find a reason to change it they would charge me 70 bucks for the evaluation. But, if they did find a cause to change it they would do it for free. I told him I would wait and see if the smell went away.

What do you guys think? Are they obligated to change it even though he said, "Not all '07 Liftbacks were affected?"

Yeah, that sounds like a BS excuse. The TSB says Liftback, NOT some of them

not true, it does give a VIN number cutoff point so not ALL liftbacks are involved.....

Oh man, where would I be without this forum. I was in a crash in my friends Honda once, and it's the same smell as when the Airbags deployed. At least now I have a chance to make it go away, hopefully Whitby Toyota aren't dicks and they won't try to jerk me around.

edit: Okay so I gave Toyota Canada a call and they want me to take it into the dealer to take a look at it first. I have a feeling I'm going to get inroduced to that evaluaton fee you guys were talking about... Here I was hoping for just a take-it-in-have-it-replaced-no-questions-asked kinda deal, but I guess they're just not going to let this go without a fight.

Don't feel bad. Mine does the same thing when I nail the gas at wide open. Mine is an 08 LB that's white colored too :)

The dealer pretty much told me the same as they did to you, that it's just all the extra fuel being dumped in running rich, then burning off. Told me that it's a "Toyota smell".
I guess I can see where there coming from, kind of like how Fords at WOT smells like eggs and fruit punch lol.
