Some Interesting Facts

here's some stuff that's going to be on my test tomorrow. it's crazy...

in the past 200 years, the US has lost 50% of its wetlands and 90% of its northwestern old-growth forests. every Sunday, more than 500,000 trees are used to produce the 88% of newspapers that are never recycled.

the average college student produces 640 pounds of solid waste each year, including 500 disposable cups and 320 pounds of paper. half of all automobile trips in the US are inder 3 miles, a distance that oucld be walked in less than one hour at no appreciable nost to the environment or pocketbook. North Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.

that's crazy stuff...

And you wonder why the World HATES us?

Funny thing is we all know and have heard these numbers before... But we still don't care to do anything about it!

We Americans are assholes that way!

I recycle an assload. My household produces ONE 50 gallon can of garbage roughly every 4 months. We generate a truckload (literally) of recyclables every 2 months. Not too bad, I think. I even have a special trash can at work where I collect stuff and take it home. We're slowly converting over to the power-saving corkscrew-lookin' bulbs, which is pretty cool... you can run 4 of them at a time and still burn less power than a single 60w bulb, and they'll knock your eyes out. The US is still going to an ecological hell in a handbasket, but at least I won't feel guilty for contributing.

yeah, over 90 percent of the light bulbs in our house are the spiral-looking flourescent (spelling?) type. we have two separate trash bins, one for trash, and one for recycling.

we don't do it now, but when we used to live in Vallejo, we would stock up on the bottles and cans and take them to the recycling center and get $$$.

the thing that really reduced our garbage beyond recycling is composting.
not only that, but you produce some great fertilizer for your garden while you're at it.
i put one small waste-paper sized bag at the curb every week for a house with 3 people.
