Accidentally put transmission fluid in engine ?!?!
M. 2007 yaris
I was meaning to drain and refill the transmission fluid, instead I drained it and put 3 quarts of transmission fluid into the engine. Then i drove 22 miles to and from work with no transmission fluid and 3.9qt motor oil, 3qt atf mixed in my engine. When I got home I knew the car was driving weird so i checked it then after loosing my sh!+ I draine oil/atf and added all the correct motor oil and atf. Also changed the motor oil filter. Is there anything else I should do or look out for. |

Far from an expert, but I've had a fair bit of experience with various fluid changes. When you say "driving weird", can you be more specific? It might help other more knowledgeable people here help you. Now that you've corrected the fluids, how is it currently driving?
I doubt that the ATF itself (in terms of its composition) in the motor oil would do any harm to your engine, especially for that short a distance, but the overfilling would concern me. Afaik, the Yaris's crank lobes do not directly contact the oil, so I don't know that the oil would foam and lose lubricity - the oil is in a pan which does not actually house the crank. Did you have any oil foaming out of the dipstick tube? I'm really surprised that there was enough ATF in the system to even move your car, but there must have been (barely) enough left in the torque converter, lines and trans and radiator. If you had slippage, delayed gear engagement or rough shifting due to insufficient fluid level, it's possible that there was fluid overheating and damage occured to internal transmission parts such as the clutches, but, again, 22 miles is not that far. Was it driving in a strange manner from the beginning of the 22 miles, mid way or toward the end?

The engine should be just fine, the tranny, well keep an eye on it. With everything corrected, did it drive ok? These are durable cars.

I agree with the above. Engine will be fine, transmission may not be. Fill the trans up properly an drive it until it die and then just get a junkyard trans. It might still last you a while

Your engine basically just got a flush, i wouldn't recommend doing it again unless its kill or cure though. Your automatic gearbox probably just had its life shortened, it evidently had something in or it probably wouldn't have made it 22 miles. Fill it up. See how far it goes. Get a rebuilt one or a scrapyard one when it finally does grenade.
