What is this?
After 9 years, I suddenly realised I'd been assuming this was part of the bonnet/hood release, even though I know full well that I pull a mechanical cable to release.
Googling shows lots of engine bays without it, and some later models with it. My theories are an ambient temperature sensor, a collision sensor, or a something-else. What lies beneath this black metal shield? |

Looks like there’s a wire bundle going through a hole in the metal beneath The thing you are mentioning. Perhaps it’s to protect the wires from being damaged?

Unplug it and see if the air bag light comes on.
