Fuel Economy Rumors
Windows up = Better MPG
(Due to less drag) I love the back of my car, the front... not so much |

More of a question tbh and it's a thread for people to add what they have heard and to elaborate on them

my experience has been that up to 60-62 mph my mpg is better with windows down/ac off. above that window up/ac on the over as the more efficient method.

AC always should be off. If you can anyways. The drag the windows cause is negligible at any speed that is legal to drive.

however, if I am on a longer trip of mostly interstate (65+mph) and the windows are down I will lose 2-3 mpg's. a bigger issue to me is that at highway speed and drivers window down, the noise level is just way to high for my liking. this has nothing to do with the car itself. drivers window down is just very noisy no matter what car I am in. check this out: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv...dition-eng.php It's been found that a variety of everyday activities can cause exposure to sound levels above 85 dBA. A few examples are: •listening to music through headphones or earbuds •attending a rock music concert •mowing the lawn •using a table saw •driving a car on the highway with the windows open at the decibel levels of an open window at highway speeds, hearing loss is a real possibility over time. its just so gradual and cumulative that people wont readily notice it. it will just be one of many factors leading to poorer hearing later in life. |

My mother's uncle (her mother's brother) was an artillery man in WW2. Guy was stone deaf. Had to have a phone that flashed strobes to get his attention, and an inductive loop around the couch to get the sound from the phone and the TV into his hearing aid.

Even before there WAS A/C owner's manuals recommended to use the wing vents and the fans for cooling rather than the windows because of decreased fuel economy. |

I wouldn't be surprised if Why? agreed with this sentiment . He thinks that the world would be better off if 90% of the people in the U.S. Northeast ceased to exiist . |

I also heard that fueling the car at night gets you more gas? I guess due to evaporation?

It is a bad rumor made by people who do not know gas is stored underground and is always very close to 55 degrees no matter what the outside temp is.
