curious about sedan vs liftback mpg comparison
i've noticed from visiting various site like fuelly, ecomodder, etc... that it seems people with MT and sedan ON AVERAGE seem to get slightly better mileage than the liftback, with 3 door liftbacks in turn slightly beating out the 5 door LBs. (i was only checking manual trans on all of these)
checking the weight, they are all about the same. i think the sedan might be a few pounds less but not a significant amount. does anyone have any experience driving both types and if so, what was your experience with the mileage (btw, i own the 5dr LB so i'll try to break this stat!) |

All body styles should get about the same.
i've been lazy and haven't entered my mileage into fuelly, but avg should still be the same. |

The only thing I can think of is aero; the sedan is probably a bit better than the hatch.

I thought it was a given the sedan got a bit more? Aero being the reason, as stated above. I have considered a sedan just for that reason, if something ever happens to my'08 HB 3 dr. It'd also be nice to have the rear windows open, my dog hates the HB as where he rides in back he can't stick his head out. At least he pisses on it all the time.

they stopped importing the sedan in 12 due to lack of sales. I think it looked to much like the Corolla. But I love mine for sure. Its on the highway that the mileage goes up and yes, its the aero thing.

????? I thought it was because they didn't want to be selling the 2nd generation of the sedan to the general public at the same time they were selling 3rd generation hatches to the general public. New car sales to the general public in the U.S. re the 2nd generation stopped for both the hatches and the sedan with the 2011 model year. For the 2012 model year in the U.S., the 2nd generation sedan continued with fleet sales (rental car companies, etc.) only, even though the 2nd generation sedan continued to be sold in other parts of the world until 2013.

The 2012 sedan was still a 2nd gen.
3rd gen Sedan is for a totally different market. |

i own a hatchback and so far i have been getting good mileage but the sedan, with it's cavernous trunk space, beckons... it also has a better driver's seat (at least up here on the great white north models).

Yes, Aero is definitely the reason. The LB's rear design lends to slightly higher drag.

The sedan offers a lower roof line, and more laid back windshield, this would help at freeway speeds.

having driven both for over a year and keeping pretty good track of miles and gallons used, I could see no discernible difference between the two. the much bigger difference in the real world is the manual transmission vs the auto.

the sedan has a drag coefficient of .29, which is the same as the 3rd gen hatch. the second gen hatch was at .30

07 sedan w/ manual tranny here. 42 mpg summer and 37 winter. Not a hyper miler, just drive gently.
