Does each bar stand for 1 gallon?
I am talking about the fuel display on Yaris. I just wonder if each bar stands for 1 gallon?
BTW, how you guys can calculate the actual mileage? Thanks!! |

No. If you want further information, please visit the Fuel Economy Thread where you can dig out quite a lot.

Each bar lasts the same?I think that the lower bars last less.

I know I get about 200 miles on the top half of the gauge, and only about 100 or so on the bottom half. I wish Toyota would make the gauge a little more acccurate. My 04 Tacoma was the same way.

I think pretty much every car out there now has a non-linear fuel gauge. I had a loaner Mazda6 for a few weeks and that thing would get something like 80-100 miles before the needle would even move! But once it hit 1/2 tank it would drop like a rock.
My Mazda5 is the same (first 1/2 lasts longer than the 2nd 1/2) but not to the extent of that Mazda6. |

The top bar is especially misleading. Depending on how full you fill up, it can be equal to two or more other bars. However, as said by the member above, other cars' gauges may also suffer more or less from the same problem of nonlinearity.

i have yet to see a 100% linear car... I don't know of anything with a square tank, thats the only way you would ever get an accurate reading, and you can't have one, because as you get low the gas would slosh around, and cause lots of issues. You could tilt it back, but as far as the guage is concerned, its no longer square :)

Since there are 8 bars each bar is 1/8 of a tank or 1.3875 gallons. I view 2 bars as a quarter of a tank and 4 bars as half a tank.

So obiviously, each bar means differently. First bar will last longer is because when u filled up your tank, the gas level is higher than what the gas level detector can measure. thats why the first bar always last longer in almost every car.

I fill up when the last bar begins to blink. Usually takes just under 10 gallons. The 07' U.S. hatchback tank holds 11.2 gallons, so your safe from running out. I don't know fuel compacities on other years/models. Filling 10 gallons makes fuel consumption calulations very easy. For instance; 345 miles between fills = about 34.5 MPG. 380 miles = about 38 MPG. Simple!
