Nope. Use MAF specific cleaner or electrical contact cleaner. Brake/Carb cleaners can leave behind a film on the sensor which will cause codes.

While it's "not recommended" many mechanics have been using brake cleaner and carb cleaner for years with no problems. I've used brake cleaner on more than a couple vehicles with no issues. All the aerosol cleaners are very similar to each other with most being a mix of highly volatile solvents and a propellant.

I would use only a cleaner that is specifically marked as "for MAFs". I do not want to take any risk. Therefore you should not user the suggested cleaner.

Which brake cleaner are they using? (High VOC or low VOC)

I've used brake cleaner for years to clean MAF. The VOC is irrelevant, just use what you got and make sure it doesn't leave a residue.

Doesn't the MAF sensor have to survive everything gaseous coming up from the crankcase and through under the valve cover?

There are still fine particulates that get through an air filter. This very slowly over time accumulates on the fine wire in the maf.

Also, depending upon the MAF design one wire is heated, like a toaster element and can burn said particulates, which stick to it. This is why you don't want to clean the MAF with anything that leaves a residue. It will burn on too and give incorrect data.

We use the CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner. Although you can also use other brands of MAF Sensor cleaners, as well as, electrical contact cleaners.

I still do not understand why someone would spray the brake cleaner on MAF sensor.
200ml MAF cleaner spray (by Liqui Moly) costs some 6 USD here, over the years I used it to clean 5 MAFs and one throttle body and there is still something remaining for further usage. Which means it costs less than 1 USD to clean the MAF properly and risk-free. |
