Can you put 195 60 15 tires on 185 60 15 rims?
Hey peeps,
Just wondering, is it safe to put 195 60 15 tires on 185 60 15 rims. I need some new rubber and for some reason 195 is cheaper than 185. Thanks

When you look at tires, the manufacturer will list the rim widths that are compatible with a particular sized tire (5.5", 6", 6.5", etc.)

Just multiply by 2.54... Actually, pulling up an example on TireRack.com, I see that a 195/60 R15 will work on a 5.5" to 7" rim, so the simple answer to your question is: Yes a 195 is fine on a 185 spec rim. You will increase the tire height by 12mm with a 195/60 vs a 185/60.

I think I've got myself a decent deal. $80 a tire including fitting and balancing. Then the front end alignment is gonna be $55. Tires are not a brand name but look like these MICHELIN XM1+

195/60/15 is taller than 185/60/15
195/55/15 is a tiny bit shorter than 185/60/15 195/50/15 is significantly shorter than 185/60/15 May vary slightly by brand. |

195/60/15's will fit the stock wheels very well... and IMHO the 195/60/15 is a better fitment than the original 185/60/15.

If both are 60 tall, how on earth could the 195 be 12mm bigger? I can see wider because it's 195 instead of 185..but both are 60 in height

The "60" part is a percentage... really weird system, tires are measured in centimeters, percents and inches
Basically the actual height of the sidewall is 60% of the width of the tire (the 185/195 part).

op, i have 195/60r15 on my sedan. they are approx 1.98% too tall so the speedo will be slightly off and your odometer will read 1.98% too few miles.
to compute mileage you must multiply the miles driven by .0198 to come up with the actual miles before you divide by gallons used. |

Thanks everyone for you help on this issue. But I now have 4 185 60 15 and could not be happier. Mods please close this thread.
