Custom Headunit
Hi,
Need some help choosing / installing a custom headunit. I want to get a touchscreen double din. Something like a Pioneer or an Alpine. Primary functions: Satnav Playback from iPod Handsfree (Bluetooth) That is all the I need, and anything else is an added bonus. So I was wondering which make is best for Sat nav. I know it is advisable to get something like a Tom Tom, but in this case, I really don't think that I want one, as I would prefer to spend the money on the head unit. The sat nav is only if I get really really lost, as usually I prefer to read maps. I'm in London (UK) if that makes a difference by the way. I'm looking for a new double din headunit, a good shallow sub woofer (that packs a punch but isn't extremley loud), new speakers for the two in the front doors, and all necessary fitting accesories/cabling such as ISO adapters etc... Thats why I need to ask: So what do I need? As in everything! What do I need for the complete system. In terms of price, I would like to keep it under £600 if possible?! The Yaris I have is: Yaris T3, 06 Reg, (MK2). Engine: on the left. This is what the current stereo looks like: The only problem I already see is: Is the stereo built into the dash on the top? As in: is it necessary to make some modifications to the dashboard (ie cut bits off) to fit a new hu? Any guides would be a great help. Many thanks, Nick |

Welcome to the forums
That's a nice looking stock stereo! You would probably have to replace the top part and side trim from a USDM model (which shouldn't be too hard/expensive). After that, consider getting a PC like this one (I bought mine from this site): http://www.mo-co-so.com/Pre-Built-Mi...510MO-s/23.htm Stores like these will be able to sell you anything that you need for a successful install, including a custom monitor with all the trimmings: http://www.mo-co-so.com/category-s/26.htm I know I'm sounding a bit like a salesman here, but I am not related to them in any way, other than the fact that I'm a very happy customer. Good luck with your project! It sounds like it will come out great.

By the way, I also recommend you pay a visit to MP3Car.com for inspiration. There are some really great resources to be found at that site.

To install a standard Double DIN HU, you will need the radio trim piece (silver piece around the radio) and replacements for the two vertical black pieces that run along side of the radio (the US ones don't have the holes for the radio controls).
This image shows the parts (55435, 55436, 55405): The standard 55405 part (shown in the second picture below) has an opening which is wider than a standard radio, so a filler kit is needed to fill the gap (such as Metra 95-8202 kit). The other option is the PZ489-B0330-00 (shown in the top picture below), which has a Double DIN width opening. I have all of the above parts (including both types of the radio trim). PM me for pricing if you want to purchase a set. |

Ok, so I changed my mind. No change in head unit, however I am going to put a sub in. My friend is offering me:
http://www.alpine-electronics.co.uk/.../mrp-m352.html http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products...8D4/index.html (with a box) all for £50, which I think is a good offer, especially as I want something with continuous bass output, rather than more punchy. Can anyone recommend me: Wiring kit Remote Power on Also, how easy is this to install myself? Considering I have a lot of technical experience with PA systems and that kind of thing. Thanks |

And, DEFINITELY this is something you can do yourself, since I did it with no experience in PA systems, car installs, or anything.

Do you know where I can get that part from in the UK? (Metra 99-8216)
Or if not, where best to get it from in the US? |

The problem with single DIN screens is that they are motorized/retractable, which makes them more expensive and less reliable. Be very careful with which screen you choose!

I was considering the Pioneer AVIC-910BT personally. Built in Nav, DVD, etc. etc. I was able to find via amazon a unit for around $500. I ended up purchasing a JVC unit w/o nav from a forum member, but if you PM me I can help you find a link to the Pioneer unit if you're interested. One of the reasons I really liked it is that it runs an interface overlay on Windows CE, so there are a TON of customization options (splash screens, icons, sounds, etc.)
That's my $0.02 anyways...

What at the part numbers to the side bezels? The part that around the radio knobs.
I bought a Navigation system that fits your style bezel and I can't find the part number. The trim should just pop out from the bottom and work your way up to the top no tools needed. The part numbers should be on the back side of the bezels. |
