It is true, but it's not what you think. Most of the oil is soaked in shale. It's not free flowing liquid. It will have to be extracted from the rock through some thermal process.

Canada has even more oil, but it's trapped in sand.

It comes down to cost. If oil is at $100/barrel, then the process can be viable.

A new theory is emerging with the idea that Crude oil forms as a natural inorganic process which occurs between the mantle and the crust, somewhere between 5 and 20 miles deep. The proposed mechanism is as follows: http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38645
Checkout the Abiotic oil theory if you have been wondering how a few ancient forests and decaying dinosaurs could have fermented into oceans of underground oil all around the world.

Yeah - ever hear the phrase 'You can't squeeze blood out of stone'? Well our addiction to oil is so pervasive we sure as hell are willing to squeeze oil out of stone!

The other poster is right - this has been known for a while but it costs more to extract than the benefit received from it. Of course with the ridiculous price of oil last summer it's now worth considering.

Can't escape the feeling that this is the mark of a true addict though - just picture someone working feverishly to scrape whatever residue they can out of whatever device they use to consume their drug of choice.

the processing to remove these oils use lots of water which is disgarded and pollutes . The watershed above and below ground are polluted when it's removed as well . Many countries have law suits against the AMERICAN oil companies because of the messes they left behind causing cancer , etc.. Think they give a RATS about AMERICAN or CANADIAN people , wildlife , or environment . We're all commodities . And if we don't have safe drinking water , then tough luck . Water is going to be the next COMMODITY and CANADA has the most virgin water in the world . Therefore , between the oil sands and water , they'll make mo' money . Thus becoming a SUPERPOWER like RUSSIA from their resources . Then the time us AMERICANS are out of gas and weak from dehydration the CANADIANs will invade .
