HID - Seeking Advice on Equipment, Installs, Kits, etc.
I've decided that my next mod will be a HID setup for the front lights, with a JDM tail light conversion in the near future.
I have never installed a HID on a vehicle, and I am seeking advice on which equipment to purchase. Are there any particular kits or brands that are suitable for the Yaris? There are numerous universal kits that are on the market; are they acceptable for installation to the Yaris? What equipment is required, and what sort of work needs to be performed? Awaiting your expert opinions!

bigsky, the only thing you'll need as is with the Yaris is HB3 Rebased HID bulbs, a ballast/igniter, and optionally... but recommended, a harness. The only problem is since the Yaris uses a Dual filament bulb, you'll lose hi-beam, the only other option is a retrofit of say... a bi-xenon projector unit, which is a lot more involved. Chris07LB has done a kit-in, so maybe he can recommend a kit to you.

I sell/install the EagleEye brand kits now. Just actually swapped my other HID kit out last night for the EagleEye.
Now you do have some choices here.. (1) You can get a single beam (low beam only) H4 kit, which includes a WATERPROOF ballasts with built in igniter, HID bulbs, all wires, and a mounting bracket (not needed) to mount the ballasts. (2) You can get a High/Low (high & low beam) H4 kit, which includes everything mentioned above, PLUS the wiring harness/relay needed for the High/Low kit. The beauty of this kit is, one you get high beams, but most important, unlike other High/Low kits out there, the high's are BUILT into the HID bulb assy.! Other brands use a small little halogen bulbs, attached to the HID bulb, that has a chance of one day buring out, and needing to remove your HID bulb assy., to replace. That and it also looks like a cleaner install, without the little halogen stuck in there! PM me if you have any other questions.

BUT, all thats needed is to remove two wires, and the HID bulb.. swap in your stock bulb, and plug the harness back in. Everything can stay mounted and installed, so withing 5 minutes you can switch back to boring halogen to pass inspection.

Thanks for getting back to me on the pricing Chris. I'm considering the hi/low kit.
1) Would I have to disable the daytime running lights? 2) How long can you expect the bulb to last? About how much to replace when they go? 3) That garage is larger than my first home. |

Here's my next question for those that have installed HID:
Is a projector required to achieve a SAFE cut off for the light output? Or is the halogen housing (existing stock housing for halogen bulbs) sufficient and produces a SAFE cut off for the light emitted by the HID? I'm all for looks and performance, but I do not want to be a danger to other drivers. Awaiting your responses!

After seeing the results of sam07yaris' retrofit hid conversion, I am going to follow his method and perform a full retrofit too.
The kit-in results look great, but I'd rather take the extra step and do a pseudo OEM setup. Wish me luck! BTW - this won't happen anytime soon, gotta get those JDM tails in first

I had a kit installed by a friend. And lets just say that stupid storm that came to the northeast caused a little damage. A fence hit the side my my car, my HID buld got a bit of water and blew out on 1 side. Yeah Im really not having a good day.
As for the nice dent and missing paint, I cant fix right now,, but as for my HID being out, where in the world can I buy a replacement D2R bulb ( 6000 k, originally Philips brand ) Thanks, In zip code 11368. Any stores/prices would be greatly appreciated cause I need a replacement bulb asap. |
