Seatbelts - Use Them!

I attended a funeral for a young man today (20) who was ejected after the driver presumably fell asleep at the wheel. I'm probably one of the more "seasoned" people on this site and felt compelled to urge all of you to use your seatbelts. I'm having the same conversation with my own sons (all six, ages 14-24) and wanted to make sure my Yaris World colleagues heard the same message...stay safe friends!

When I was growing up, seatbelts were "optional" and we never wore them. I personally decided that seatbelts were wise after having my second car wreck at age 16, a rollover. I considered myself lucky to have not been injured in either of my first two wrecks, and I've worn a seatbelt since then.

I've raised my son to see seatbelts as a natural part of being in a car. He understands their value (he's ridden with me in autocrosses!), and always wears one.

Sadly, much of my generation never accepted seatbelts as "mandatory", and thus there's still a good portion of the current generation that sees them as "optional".

Wear your seatbelts, people!

Seatbelts are part of the solution. Sorry to hear about the funeral :( It is sad that people think they "can do that". I fell asleep behind the wheel once when I was young and I thought I could handle it. Totaled one side of my 69 Charger and about 300 feet of guardrail.......

My present day solution is be ready to drive when you sit behind the wheel...... be belted in, be alert and be ready for the unexpected (the other guy).

I installed my first seatbelts in 1959; inspiration was spending hours at the local track, seeing some horrendous crashes, and everyone walking away. At the time, I had to do the install, as no one else knew how, never mind why...

Now, I can't go the length of my driveway without buckling up.

Bounced off the windshield a couple times before belts were standard...don't drive without now, or let anyone ride without!

Before, I would put them on, and fall asleep on the freeway

Now, if I'm getting sleepy, I just call my gf, or put it on an all comedy station. Or just put on some Linkin Park.

I hate being tired all the time. (also trying to lay off the energy drinks).

I don't feel naked, I just feel like I'm very vulnerable. (and, as an added bonus, my estate will get $10,000 if I die in a car wreck when I have my seatbelt on (thanks to my insurance company))

When I was young I was in an accident and had to have 45 stitches all in my face because I wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Yup I also feel naked if I am in a car without one on.
