Unnoticed feature? - Toyota Yaris Forums

I just found this out today by accident when I was turning on the ignition of the yaris. My fingers slipped right when it hit start and it turned by itself and started. Maybe I'm just still not use to having something that's way better than the old echo lol ^^;

Anyone else know of this before?

Edit: okay apparently my friend told me it was auto-ignition. So if you all find me a little weird just noticing this thing.... yeah oh well lol

I knew about it. I learned about it on a Toyota Nation forum. Once I learned about it I do it every time. It's like magic. ;)

Yea, i get into somebody else's car and i just tap the key to start, the engine turns over once, they look at me like wtf, lol, such a habit.

Surprized that my buddys TSX didn't do it, tho my moms deville does :)

The autostart feature is probaly just part of the kit where the key is just a transmitter you keep in your pocket, no key, just hit the start button which is located to the left of the radio. If you take the panel off on the left of the radio, the long skinny one, it has a kinda slot where the button clearly goes.

Put your keys in, and turn it past start(i think? lol) and let go.

so what happens when the car can't start up? will it crank forever until you remove the key? lol

Tried it, I now understand what yall meant. It works yea, cool I guess.

I wonder if my other vehicles had such a simple feature (and I just never knew or noticed, like who I didnt realize w/ my Yaris until now).

I feel confused. Are we referring to Yarii that have a push "Start" button on them? But I see the ppl posting are from the US, and I thought only European models had that feature.

If we're not referring to some "Start" button, then Im lost and really have no idea what is meant by auto starting itself in teh first post?

Many cars do this, same with the electric door locks

If you were to unplug the fuel pump fuse and then get in to start the car

If you turn the key to start it and release it quickly the car will continue to crank over for several seconds all on it's own and then stop on it's own.

The reason for the electric ignition is to prevent people from trying to start an already running engine and damaging the ring gear and starter drive.

Had to go out and try for myself...

Nothing special, just instead of holding the key turned until it cranks and starts, you just click it once over in that direction (start), and it will crank and start by itself... I was thinking something cool, like the key would actually move and then click back once started.

My wife drives an '04 4Runner and it does it as well. The feature on the 4Runner is called the 'Crank Hold System' which ensures once combustion is detected, the starter will not reengage.

Here is a quote from Team Lexus forum "Lexus calls this feature the Crank Hold Feature which means that once the ignition key is inserted and turned all the way to the start postion and released, the starter will continue to crank the engine as much as needed until the engine starts up. And even if you did turn the key to the start position once the engine is already running, the starter will not engage, so you will not hear that nice loud grinding sound. But Lexus has had this feature since at least 1996 when my LS400 also had the no starter engagement feature. Heck, even my 2001 Honda Goldwing motorcycle has the no starter engagement feature once the engine is running."
