One Full Year of MPG Calculations
Ok, fellow Yaris owners, I will have had my Flint Mica 2009 Yaris Sedan with automatic transmission for one year come Tuesday, April 13th.
I have kept a log book of every single drop of gas that I have put in the car since I bought it. The dealer filled it up for me the day I took delivery, and I have kept track of every fill-up since then. I use Gassavers.org to record my fill-ups, but I have also kept an Excel spreadsheet at home. My overall average MPG for the first year is 36.73. Apparently Gassavers drops the earlier tanks and only shows the average for the recent tanks, because it is showing that I am averaging only 33.19 MPG. My mileage dropped off pretty severely during the winter months. The 36.73 is the true average for the whole first year of ownership. The range has been from 29.49 MPG to 43.55 MPG. The average price per gallon that I paid for the period was $2.505. Tom |

That's great Tom. The question is, recalling all the angst you experienced over the purchase, are you happy with your decision?

Sure am, Altitude! The little car has not been a minute's trouble. I have not had to take it back to the dealer for anything other than oil changes. It has been a lot of fun to drive, and I am VERY happy with the MPG. It has unbelievable cabin room and trunk room for such a small car. I find it to be very comfortable for long trips, and I have put in as many as 12 hours per day in it. I don't know what more I could ask of that little rascal. Tom |

I am glad you are happy with your Yaris. I kinda share the same feelings about this great little car. :)

I have been tracking my mileage since buying my 08 auto HB in November 2008, I haven't calculated the average yet but I know with my larger tires it isn't quite that good...
But I do love this car, it's been everything I thought it would be and more! Cheers! M2

However as I live in the UK and have a gallon equal to 4.54 litres this is not a direct comparison to your figures. Using your gallon I get about 46.7 mpg Everything you have in the USA is always bigger than those we have in the UK EXCEPT for the gallon. Your gallon is only a miserly 0.833 IMPERIAL gallons. See how impressive our gallon sounds. However the cost here is also very impressive - we are paying just over $7 per US gallon so the fuel costs me about 15 cents a mile. |

It is nice to see your average numbers are some what close to mine. I'll never be able to match what other mpg posts state.

I'm with ya, Nemelek. I'm all for good MPG, but I am not willing to go to extremes in driving techniques in order to maximize it. I'm very happy that I have a car that I can drive in a normal manner and still get 37 MPG. Tom |

Some of the claims made on this website are plausible, but after driving my Yaris for over a year, I seem to find them unrealistic for real world conditions.

My first two tanks (1/8/10 and 1/26/10), I got 28 and 34 MPG My last three tanks: 4/05/10 472mi/09.972gal = 47.332 4/13/10 504mi/10.253gal = 49.156 5/03/10 469mi/10.299gal = 45.538 And right now the 4th Bar shut off this morning @ 285mi... I could be close to a 500 mile tank when all is done. I tend to drive in many conditions (Winter, Spring, Highway, State Road, City, mountain, valley, etc.), and very very light on the gas... cautious with my driving technique all the time. I wouldn't say I'm extreme yet? No hypermiling, scanguaging or major physical car adjustments. But, lots of gliding, slow starts, slow driving, and Ethanol free gas... Heck, I drive slower than grandma's grandma! Wait! They were still riding in horse and buggy... LOL!

i get about 38 mpg roughly. I stopped keeping track of it a long time ago, I am just too lazy, i just do the quick gas station math. the longest i've been able to go on one tank of fuel was 444 miles. Then the car stalled. Don't do it, this tank scavenges the heck out of everything, so when it says the tank is empty, it really means it.

When traveled from Colorado to Maryland last year to visit family, I averaged 36 MPG doing about 70 to 85 the whole way with intermittent AC and variously strong headwinds.
When they asked what sort of MPG's I got I told them 36 and they said "That's all!?" They were shocked such a small car didn't get better mileage, but I'm happy with it considering the conditions of the drive and the fact that my Jeep would have had me at about 15mpg for the same run. Plus the Yaris is just fun as all heck to drive especially on the twisty mountain roads around here. |

I have a 2000 BMW 323 coupe (2.5 6 cylinder, 5 speed manual) and I got 37 mpg driving from LA to Vegas (which takes crossing some lowish mountains) and 34 for the two-way trip. But when I used to drive only in the city it would average 18 to 22. |

cool... Yeah Gassavers only shows your last 90days on the banner, but if you click the banner you'll see the life time FE avergage.
I've been tracking my FE on Gassavers since the car was about 7months old... have had it almost 2.5years now and i'm just barely over 40mpg for the life. The most hours in a day i've done was 10ish. I can't imagine doing 12hrs without having to switch positions with a passenger. I hate driving, I do too much of it. At least, too much to not get paid. I've got a few more 1000+ mile trips in my near future. When I get married i'll be doing the 470mil trek back home (Spokane, WA) and then afterwards up towards Banff, Canada, then back down to Eugene, Oregon... Thinking over that 10 day period I should rack up close to 2,000 miles. I too love the realiability, and am so confident in this car, i've recently changed to 10,000 mile oil change intervals with 5,000 mile oil filter change intervals. The one thing I didn't see in your post was how many miles you did in the first year? I did around 21,000 my first, and around 19,000 my second year, and right now i'm only at 5,000 |

As of the time of my last fill-up, I had 17,918 miles on the car. That was on April 10th. The car will be one year old tomorrow, April 13th.
Most of my miles are my commute to work of 23.7 miles one way. That's cool that you can click on the Gassavers.org banner and get the whole history! You taught me something, talnlnky! Tom Last edited by YarisOwnersDad; 04-12-2010 at 07:16 PM. |
