Sometimes you have to work with what you have not what you want.

Thinking of Reinforcing the back of seat putting hard plastic down cover with
rubber liner and pads and maybe dog guard?

sounds like a start :)

I'd be very concerned about all of the interior back there, the plastic isn't too hard to scratch.

I plan on getting a big area rug to put back there when I carry my two dogs around.

And I think the LB is pretty dog-friendly, especially if you get the fold-flat rear seat that comes with the power package.

If you don't need to seat more than 2 people I would say just take out the back seat and put in a grille behind the front seats. There's a thread in the DIY section about this (and I think it is in the DIY manual too), where a member made a flat flooring there to carry photographic equipment, this could be a good starting point.

I may do this myself, the back seat has gotten 0 use, but lots of stuff has been on top of it! Its almost wasted space right now.

That would definitely be the 1st step to dog proofin the car

I interpret as "I have a bench seat", not "i want to keep the bench seat" :)

I just re-re-read the first post and you may be right The original phrasing is ambiguous on the matter...
