y is it pawn shops think they can charge retail prices???

i went to the pawn shop and low n behold....a springfield xd 9mm sitting in the window. they want 500+ for the thing and retail is 549. come on...you really think i'm going to sac less than 50 bux and buy used??? come on...who do you think we are. with internet and even 'price guarantee' at local retailers...y would anyone not shop around first?

honestly....i took a picture today after coming home because the guy swore up and down that the gun was retail of 700+...and i'm going back tomorrow to barter him down to about 375 for it. it's not an xdm model, just an xd...nothing special about it. parts are even missing in the freakin case....come on ppl...get real.

you still gotta provide the info, wait the 3 days, just like buying new. also, if the seriel is even scratched they cant buy it. so...it's a pretty clean system. plus, the pawn shop has to notify police of just about everything they buy, keep records of who pawned it, and wait 20 days before putting it on the shelves. so it's a pretty clean system if you think about it...someone gets robbed they usually report it next day at most so 20 days is plenty of time for a claim or kickback from police/insurance.

Just curious, what's a "FAC?"

By the way, I have a good friend here who is in the Canadian Air Force. He is an avid shooter but has told me the restrictions on firearm ownership in Canada are very stringent as compared to Texas. He actually has a Texas concealed carry license since he is recognized as a Texas resident while stationed here, which he amusing likes to show everyone when he goes back home to Canada! His brother recently completed the police academy up there, and has less ability to use his duty weapon in self-defense than we do here!

Cheers! M2

I ask myself the same thing ... I found a Ruger .380 that I wanted and they are asking $399 for it .... it's brand new for $470 online. I tried talking them down and they wouldn't do it - for $70 I'd rather just get something I know I was the one properly caring for it from day 1.

Pawnshops suck sometimes

Depends on where you are, and what you're using it for. You don't need any certification in TN if you're just going to keep a gun in your home for protection - but if you're going to have it on you at all times you need your conceal and carry - but there are ways legal ways around that also.

I don't know what the laws are in every state - they vary from place to place.

And Craigslist is getting to be just as bad. I've been looking for a used recumbent exercise bike, and the sellers on CL want a new price for a used bike. I can get the same thing on Amazon with a warranty for about $25 more.

Hell, I've seen pawn shops with used guns that were priced over MSRP! I collect military surplus rifles (C&R) and often stop by the numerous pawn shops in SA and local area to see if I can find any deals. I am shocked when I see a "bubba'd" SKS for $500 or a WASR-10 AK-47 for $650 when I bought a former for $300 and you can get a brand new WASR-10 for $399 online or at the local gun shows.

But I have found a few bargains, I picked up a Yugo M48 Mauser for $200 out the door a few weekends back. It's in pretty good shape and I saw a similar one at a gun show the next weekend for $400.

By the way, there is no waiting period in Texas. Since they must have a Federal Firearms License (FFL), all you have to do is qualify (be a Texas resident and not a convicted felon), fill out a ATF Form 4473 and have ID. They call the info in and get an approval to sell the weapon usually within 5-10 minutes. If you have a Texas CHL, or an 03 FFL like I do, they don't even have to call it in.

There is no firearms registration in Texas but FFLs are required to keep paperwork on all transactions. They are liable to an ATF inspection at any time. There are the rare occasions of stolen weapons being sold by pawn shops, but the local law enforcement agencies work closely with the pawn shops so it is not a common event. Plus, the shops are liable for such instances under the Texas Penal Code (§371.181. STOLEN GOODS. (a) A pawnbroker shall monitor goods purchased, accepted in pawn, or otherwise acquired by the pawnbroker in order to identify and prohibit transactions involving stolen goods) under the Texas Pawn Shop Act of 2003.

However, "robbing" customers with such prices seems to be OK!

Cheers! M2
