new job sacrifice
I have a hard decision to make I got a job offer with a huge company at nearly double my pay with full benifits and I just found out my wife is pregnant. If I were to put her and the kid on my insurance I would be paying 500 dollars a month just for health care. The bad part is the job is 500 miles away and I will have to short sale my house if I cant rent it out. I currently do not care for the florida panhandle because there is nothing to do here there is no industry here and the pay is below the rest of the country. What would you do in this situation?

I've been there and done that, all I can say is family comes first and an opportunity like this doesn't come around often, go for it so the new born can have something for the future. Consult with the lady of the house so there is no misunderstandings, good luck and my fee is 10%, lol

Times are hard out there and folks that are willing to work should be rewarded. Hopefully you've found a bright opportunity for you and your family. You'll take the lumps and do make the best decision. Best wishes to you and your family.

Is the job something you want to do in an area you want to live? Long term for it looks good? And like he said, how does your wife feel about it? Will her pregnancy be covered under the new job? Sometimes they call that a "pre-existing condition" and dont want to cover it. Things to figure out.....
Sounds like a good deal to me and if I were in the same position, I'd go for it, but thats just me...... |

i'd rather happiness than money any day. i moved from industry to a back-woods country city for my kids. i'm happy. i can do things i want. there's nothing major for entertainment around here. we got movie theaters, shopping malls, stores...but nothing like houston, new york or los angeles. you'll find things to keep you occupied and entertained.
i started doing wood working. i've built the kids shelves, drawers, doll houses, tree houses and forts. i've fixed broken furniture, repaired my house and fixed bikes and such. any way, money doesnt buy happiness. it buys stuff, which usually leads to higher bills and more expectations. higher income...more demand for stuff or better stuff. so, you'll be where you are, just higher income, higher standard of living, and more demand. i'm happy making my measly 28k/yr. i make what i have work, and work better. i fix stuff other people throw away and usually sell it or use it. i make ends meet by doing odd-jobs for under the table money. |

why you still where you at??? why havent you moved yet? it's better to let wifey get used to climate while she's adjusting to carrying around the baby. you may not have much for help moving stuff around, but once you're there and it's done she'll be just fine. if she's comfortable in the old house after baby then she wont want to leave. i'd say do it all at once....hop up and leave. one other thing...do you have family near you now? because there will be times when you need help with baby. specially if it's a first. if mom n dad are close it may be worth hangin around. and she's gonna get home sick/lonely if she leaves her mom,. |

I would have moved a long time ago if I didnt already own a house that i'm way upside down in trust me I kick myself in the ass every day for buying this place. My mom is the only family close by (50 miles) but is single and works everyday. She has no family in this country her mom moved herself and my wife here when she was seven then moved back to australia then passed away 5 years ago. Me and her have been through alot in our lives and I really want to make the best of it because I feel me and her both deserve it. Its just really hard to know which path in life is the best I dont want my kid to have to go through what we have been through. |

Take the job but make sure you talk it out with your wife so she understands why you're doing it.
I'll tell you right now that more time with family (even a few hours a week) is something people can't even buy in some jobs. I just lost a colleague to cancer a couple of weeks ago. At his funeral this week, the priest told everyone that in his years of doing his thing, he's NEVER had a dying member of his parish confess that he wished he worked more or earned more money. Give your family and especially your little one a fighting chance, and be in a position to provide for them. But don't ever sacrifice the opportunities you get to spend with your family and child. Good luck, man. |

Insurance will be going up everywhere most likely. With the new laws as well as the insurance companies raising their rate sin general due to health care costs on the rise that is how the bouncing ball moves. My company for example had to more than double the monthly on the family rate because Blue Cross hiked their rates tremendously.

Money doesn't buy happiness, but I'd take the job. Heck, I'm doing something similar, only I'm taking a pay cut to be at a company where I can eventually be promoted, and I don't have to deal with my horrible management. I have a but of a nest egg so I'm not too worried about the pay cut, money doesn't buy happiness, but I have not felt more relaxed in my entire life (Not that I've lived long, I'm 26). Discuss with the wife and good luck with your decision.

There are no right or wrong decisions in life. If you choose A over B you just experience a different set of life lessons. Sometimes the best thing that could happen turns out to be the worse. Money is a consideration but shouldn't be the only factor. I took a $10,000 pay cut this year for better hours and time off. Good luck and make the best of whatever you decide.

Thats the great thing about this job is its less hours, currently I work six days a week every other week from 8-5 which kinda blows. This company also pays overtime which would be nice my current job does not. One of the other great things is its a smoke free facility which is a huge plus for me. Its going to be a huge decision to make and I'm going to have to weight all my options.

Honestly, if $500 a month, you said that's what the insurance would cost, is going to take half of your paycheck. And the new job is twice what you make now. Stay were you are and get on Welfare if you aren't already.
Or is that the move to a new location and job make you feel very unsettled, like it would most of us. I would take the job based on the information you have given. Good Luck |

So you have this on the table:
-New Job -2X the pay -full benefits -coverage for the entire family ...and if I understand correctly, you are NOT satisfied with where you currently live in the Florida panhandle. This doesn't even sound like it needed to be asked. Chattanooga, while no bustling powerhouse, is a nice city and the scenery is MUCH nicer than constant endless flat land and beach. I lived in South Nashville for 3 years and would go back if I could. Moreover, you have Atlanta, Knoxville and Nashville no more than 2 hours in any given direction. Plus, Chattanooga has a lot of job openings coming up with the new Volkswagen factory going online. Sounds like there's an overwhelming amount of reasons to leave Florida. -SAV

Stop making your house payments. You are throwing money into a hole you cant get it back from. Take your house payment, find a place to rent at the new job area and just let the house in FL go back. It will hurt your credit for several years, but you are improving your families lot in life by doing so.
