tachometer advice - Toyota Yaris Forums

I have been looking for the right tach for me but I have been having some major fitment issues.

I really don't like putting it on the A pillar or close to that. I thought about putting it in the drivers side glove box but I worry about how small it will have to be to fit in there.

I am alright with mounting it to the steering column but then the clearance becomes an issue with opening the drivers side glove box.

I was thinking of 2.5-3.75 inches in diameter. the best I can tell, the clearance goes down to 2 inches between the steering wheel and the glove box door when it is being opened.

I would like a black faced tach and one that only sweeps to 8k.

after almost a week of frustratingly looking around, any advice is welcomed.

1. You'll have to pick between 2 1/16" and 3 3/8".
2. Get a name brand. (Autometer good, Glowshift bad, for example)
3. You actually use your driver glovebox? There is plenty of storage up front. You have to give something up to have a tach in front of you.
4. A tach should be where you can see it easily, or it's useless -- IMO.

I guess me PM-ing you this same info wasn't convincing - lol.

I found some slim tachs but they were all the 5" monsters. I was hoping that someone would know of a vendor of a slim one that was in the 3" range.

I know, I am asking a lot but I was hoping for someone to come out of the woodwork on this one.

I have come to respect your opinion very much but at the same time, nobody can know it all.

might take a bit of fabbing, but why not mount it on the glovebox lid itself, so you could still open it?

I've done body work before and well my work is eh....yea. probably not going to work out too well if I do it.

I may just sacrifice the use of that compartment and get the 3 3/8 one. i can't really see myself using a little 2 inch one.

garm actually has a gauge cluster that can go there and will house 3 gauges. I thought hard about that one.

^ that would work. You could also put the 3 3/8" tach on a cup that mounts to the glovebox. No fabbing, glovebox opens. I'm not sure what you're still looking for?

^ COOL, you will love it. I can't have a vehicle without a tach; I even added one to my vintage micro car.

I took "Altitude's" adivse in this tread and installed this "Revolution" tach from "Speedhut" (in the same location on the steering column as he did) and I'm very satisfied with it. (scroll down)

It is a bit expensive but, worth it IMO as you can order it in many configurations and colors, different gauge faces etc.
(I ordered one that looks just like his.)
It also makes a very clean looking install.

I just have it mounted with some 3M double faced tape and it's fine. It may be just what you are looking for.

I put my prosport on my steering column and still access to my drivers glove. I believe its a 3 3/8's bit im not exactly sure but i know its at least a 3inch

IMO, if you spend $1400 fo a car, $130 is not too much to spend for a tach.

BTW, the "Revolution" tach can also be panel mounted using the included hardware.
Its thin profile makes it also ideal to mount in on/in the door above/behind the steering column.
However, I chose to just use the pedistal mount and not cut into anything.

alright, got the tach in. it isn't exactly what I wanted but still works well and I am working on the brightness of it (really bright). I plan to mount a pot in the glove box for the illumination wire. that way I can control how bright it is.

there is a DIY that I used on here (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/sho....php?t=662)and it was very to the point. one thing I did different was that I actually soldered everything and just tied the power and illumination wires together.

I found the add-a-fuse on amazon for about $3 (though shipping was another $5) still not bad. it doesn't come with fuses though. they are still pretty cheap.

Since I don't have power mirrors, I mounted a pot in the blank "plug" where the PM switch
would go.
