5w20 5w30 or 5w40 Oil

Hi,

I live in a relatively hot climate area (Karachi, Pakistan) max temp here are around 38 C from March to Sept and min in winters are around 8-10 C mostly in Dec / Jan. At present I use 5w20 engine oil but was wondering if shld switch to 5w40 due to our high temps in summer?

Would appreciate some advice from the experts here :)

I'm certainly not an oil expert, but I run 10-40 to 20-50 during the hot Summers, and 10-30 during the Winters in my Toyota work truck. I also change oil every 3,000 miles including filter, and mix a quart of synthetic in with the regular oil just for good measure. Also installed a magnetic drain plug which constantly collects minute iron particles from the oil. It has over 150,000 completely trouble free miles, and runs just like it was new. :)

In the summer when it is 90-100 degrees out my engine coolant temp is between 181-190 degrees.

In the winter when it is 0-40 degrees out my engine coolant temp is between 179-186 degrees.

I run 5w20 synthetic year round.

Even in an outrageously hot climate, the temperature inside your car's engine is much much hotter. As long as your car's coolant system is working, the coolant and oil temperatures won't be much different in the middle of summer from what they are in the midst of winter. A good 5w20 is fine in either cold or hot weather.

In the USA for a 2007 Yaris, Toyota recommended 5w30 oil and a six month or 5,000 mile oil change interval. This is a very conservative recommendation and it's what I use.

I'm doing 5-20, the guy at the shop was "are you sure sir? Toyota specifies 5-30"

Honestly, if I am requesting it, I obviously know what I'm talking about.

Guess that guy at the shop doesn't stay caught up as unless I am mistaken Toyota has mandated 0W-20.

20w50 is great for really hot climates and long haul driving/towing. My Yaris has had 20w50 in it it's current motor it's entire 300,000+ miles.

In your opinion does it cause a drop in MPGs?

Pep Boys was selling 5-40 diesel synth for half price because nobody was buying it.

I burn diesel spec'ed synthetic oil in my motorcycles. If I could get Rotella in a 5w20 or 30 I would use it in my Yaris. 40 is just a bit too viscous, but maybe not.

What motorcycles are those? Mine calls for 10-40 which has been going for half price at Pep Boys because no one is buying it they want 5-30, 0-20 etc/

I have a Kwawsaki KLR, which is a 650cc single and a Triumph Bonneville, which is a 900cc twin. 10w40 is fine for both, but the additive package in the CJ-4 oils is superior (IMHO) than anything found in S oils.
