Yaris reliability
Just came across this reliability rating for the Yaris. The article is dated to 2006, but I thought it was interesting, nonetheless.....

Mine has been uneventfully reliable. It's coming up on 50k miles. I guess I should read the owner's manual to see what maintenance is required; I haven't done anything but change the oil since I bought it...

I get the impression that the intended scope of the article is the U.K., but the information is still valid and a great find. I'm not surprised that the Accord is number one. One of those 'buy an article' ad/newspapers in my area published an article about a traveling salesman who traded his Accord in for a new Honda at an area dealership. The Accord had just under 800,000 miles on it.
It is nice to see a very positive Yaris post coming from a part of the automotive press. I wonder if the writer had 1st gen, 2nd gen or both in mind while writing the opinion, as 2nd gen was on the market in some parts of the world as early as sometime in 2005 I believe. |

In reading posts when I read the words water pump I pay special attention to see if I can gather any new information re if it happens to me (still have original one...knock on wood)...but most of the posts (overall) that I've read are predominantly re 2nd gen and 3rd gen models. Are 1st gen models as problematic when it comes to water pumps?

Nookandcran,
An 800,000 miles Accord? Wow. Gotta love those Hondas. I don't know, if I had not been in such a rush and in such dire straights to buy a car when I bought my Yaris, I might have bought a Fit instead. The Yaris/Fit competition is a tough one.... |

I inherited an 87 Integra and afterward an inattentive driver (looking for something on the floor in front of the passenger seat) broadsided me pretty hard. I think I put another 15-20k miles on it after that until the transmission started to give out on it and I started looking for my suzuki swift. The final mileage on it was about 191k (just under the 194k I put on my GTI) -- the water pump gave out while trying to bring it home after buying the Swift and the transmission probably would have struggled to get the car the rest of the way to the house anyway. I had AAA tow it to a parking lot within range. I left it there long enough that another tow company was called to take it to their tow lot. They let me take the personalized plates off of it and I just let them keep it in exchange for a zero bill.

It is tough. I think all Yari are better looking and I think most people who have Yari get better MPG from their cars than Fit owners, BUT with how the rear seat can be manipulated in the Fit, the Fit has more versatility re storage of large items. I can't remember the specific mileage the accord had (I want to say 788k), but it was a bit under 800k and it had to be over 780k because I remember the article saying he'd had it for an even 10 years. I did the calculation right after reading the article and I remember the total broke down to an average of a little over 1500 miles per week.

no show, no go :(

i too, was going back and forth between the fit and the yaris before i got my 2012 LB... in the end, fits just cost too damn much, and the yaris gets better gas mileage on top of being $2000 cheaper.

....also some people find that a 3-door hatchback meets their needs better than a 5-door and the Fit doesn't allow for that option.
