Turboing my car
Is the Zage turbo kit still available? I can't seem to find anywhere to purchase it?
Or does anyone have any other suggestions for a good kit? I saw a company called Turbo Specialties, but I read alot of sketchy stuff about them. Or at least a decent manifold and down pipe that I can source out the rest of the kit myself? I don't have anywhere near me that really does custom work, or at least any I would trust when I comes to stuff like that. Last edited by brushforhire; 07-16-2015 at 12:53 PM. This is about the only turbo kit I can find right now. I did some more digging and it seems like it is a decent company, and it comes complete with engine management. Turbo Specialties.

So I received what I needed to know about the Zage kit, and should hopefully have a kit in my hands shortly. I would like to use this thread as my build thread. It will a slow and methodical thread explaining what I am doing along the way and why. I hope to be able to help others who want to do this too. I have been throughly inspired by others on this forum and totally excited to make this journey too.
I hope to eventually be in the 250+ hp range. |

I do plan on a build after I get the initial install of the turbo kit done. I work at a dealership, so I can get some decent prices on used engines. I plan on doing a build on an engine stand on a second engine.
I want this project done, but not gonna rush anything. |

Can you please PM me where you got the Zage? I'm in the market myself.

Just post up parts sources here. No reason why where stuff can be purchased should be kept secret.

I tried contacting Zage before I found out Cali could them for me, and I never received any response back. It always bother's me when I tell someone I want to give them my money and they make me work to give it to them.

I ran 9psi with my custom setup and was pushing around 190 to the wheels. Going 10 on stock internals WILL cause accelerated engine wear requiring a rebuild much sooner. 170 to the wheels in this car is very fun. Really isn't any reason to get to 250 unless you just have cash to burn as it will require a bottom end build at the least. You will also lose 15 or so mpg at that power number. It will require a full fuel system upgrade. Lastly I am pretty sure the Zage will not get you to 250 anyway. Best of success with your build and ask questions if you need to. Btw I have a head with valves I am selling for 250 for someone to do a port n polish on. Pretty good price as it only has 35k miles on it.

ugh, I'm so torn. I just called my local yard, and they can hook me up with an XD 1.8 and ECM for $750. I am thinking I want to go and swap that in and then turbo that instead.
Opinions? |

Do the swap and boost that. If I hadn't done had the engine I have now I would have done the swap then boost it to 8-10psi. That should get you to 220 easy I would think. Might even be able to do it without a fuel system upgrade either.

I might be one of the few, if not the only one who thinks you should keep the original engine. This is only because you're kinda going into unknown territory. Yes, that new engine might bolt-up and work just fine, but keep it mind that the vehicle was originally designed for a different engine. You don't know how it will affect your chassis, suspenssion, etc...(or maybe someone has documented this, if so feel free to jump in)
Of course cars are overbuilt to have a certain factor of safety, but with a new engine, who knows? You and your passenger's safety might not be as high in the event of a collision. (not that I ever want you to have one of course)
