Nice review . Did your right knee ever rub / hit the center console ? Mine did during a test drive . Plan to try a few more and hope to find a better seat adjustment . I didn't notice that. I wouldn't doubt the higher MPG claims. I was happy to easily get 37. With some conservative driving, I'm sure I could've cracked 40.

Wait! So this is a Scion/Toyota vehicle...with a Mazda engine in it???
Who's idea was that again? Aren't parts for that car going to be more expensive and take longer to arrive since Scion/Toyota has to order them from Mazda?
...and here I was thinking I could finally get a 1NZ with a 6-speed from the factory...

That's correct. It's a rebadged Mazda2 sedan. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Mazda makes some fine cars. However, it is not manufactured by Toyota.

I'm sure that it would make a reasonably reliable daily-driver vehicle, but I just can't get past the horrible front design and the bizarre Mazda curves/proportions of the car in general. I do like the taillights, however. I just cannot bring myself to buy a car that makes me cringe whenever I look at it, lol.

I'm happy getting the 38-40 average MPG that I am getting on my much-cuter little 2015 manual-5 Yaris SE, as a daily driver - almost all in-town Phoenix and general suburbia driving. Plus, it is very fun/sporty to drive, and comparable to the Mazda2 "Zoom Zoom" factor in that regard. I will also hedge my bets with long-term Toyota quality over long-term Mazda quality.

Agreed.

Why would Toyota rebadge a Mazda? Toyota has virtually dozens of JDM models that could have been introduced as a new Scion.

Because Toyota now sees cars like the Yaris, Tercel, etc as low budget, thus low money makers. They are after the big profits now. They are forgetting that the small cars put them on the map. Toyota could care less about the small car market now. They're in the big leagues.

I thought this Scion and Mazda 2 are made in the Mexican Mazda plant?

Yes, it is coming out of the Mexican plant.

I don't think that I ever drive fast enough to use the 6th gear on a manual. I tend to stay in the 65-70 mph range maximum (which is still in the 2800 RPM range in 5th). All the manuals I have ever driven have been 5-speed, so the odd position of the reverse and such would likely take some getting used to - and be downright annoying for a while. It just seems like overkill to me, especially in the USA. Personally, I feel that 5-speed manuals and automatics are the "sweet spot", in terms of functionality plus overall reliability.

I would still prefer to just row through 5 gears manually in my daily driving, as opposed to 6.

Most of the information that I have read on the internet indicates that people typically shift into 6th gear around 70-75mph.
