Winter Emergency Bag
Ok so we all know the Yaris is pretty sure footed in the white stuff, though random things do occur. In the event that my Yaris slides off the road or just plain doesn't have it in it to make it all the way home and I have to park it somewhere and continue on foot i keep an emergency backpack in the car. It consists of a warm change of clothes, including underwear and wool socks, insulated hiking boots, a fleece pullover, flashlights, emergency wistle, first aid kit, fleece blanket, reflective emergency blanket, gloves, water, and some food. I have to add a folding metal shovel to this, just haven't gotten around to it as yet. Does anyone else do this and what do you carry in your bag?

You hit the nail on the top of the head. The only things I have that you did not list are a compass, three shot gun shells, water proof matches, GPS and making sure my flashlights have a stobe. My food is standard MRE's and I have two flares. This is a very good thing to do especially if you are traveling with family and young kids

Yep have to add a compass, that just makes sence. Flares I should add too. What are the shot gun shells for?

Depending on the circumstances you might be better off to stay with the car rather than walking. I have a small round tin with some tea candles and matches (along with misc other safety crap). That's enough heat in a little car to keep you warm overnight as long as you have a blanket.

I just keep my back country pack in the car all winter. It's a 20L model that contains:
Collapsible metal shovel Snowshoes Avalanche probe Avalanche beacon Hand-cranked flashlight Power bars Trail mix 2L fresh water Cable saw 2 homemade fire starters Bic lighter Lean-to tarp Emergency sleeping bag (space blanket style) 50 feet of nylon cord Extra pair of warm socks In the car with me is always my iPhone 3G (so I have GPS in addition to cellular service) and my rugged, portable solar panel/battery that can charge the phone twice.

Down here in Florida I carry a B.O.B. (Bug out bag). Pretty much the essential stuff to survive for three to four days.

If you do any cross country driving it's not a bad idea to have a roll of toilet paper in a ziplock baggie in the car as well. It's not so much an emergency item as it is a convenience, but it's come in handy a few times for me.
