Probably because they're chinese built, China is the mecca of pirated goods and "legal" copyright infringement. If they arent just a blatant ripoff of Toyota products, they may be licensed by the automaker from Toyota for sale in China, built (as someone else mentioned, like RUF) on a toyota chassis with thier own-made (or probably Toyota-made) parts.

The chinese have WAY more part of these cars then you could imagine.
That's why I posted in that thread last week about people boycotting Walmart because it's chinese owned.

Take Suzuki for example
Suzuki is a great company they build awesome bikes and good cars.
Along coms a company called Hyosung A chinese company marketing their own brand of bikes.
Now people flip out and start pointing fingers. Most hate them right away and they start to boycott the copycat chinese company.
Little do people know Hyosung is the chief and key designers for Suzuki. The Chinese company engineered and deveolped their new suspensions, fuel injection systems and the much favored Vtwin engine found in the SV models.
No body copied anyone
People own the rights and sell the rights to other companies to produce and sell products.
That's why I laugh when people think they bought a 100% American or 100% Japanese car or motorcycle. There IS NO SUCH THING ANYMORE, at least in large scale production.
Even companies like Polaris still have engines built by Fugi Heavy but don't mind slapping the MADE IN AMERICA stickers on it.

I would not be surprised if 90% of the Yaris interior is made in China.

read your new car sticker Parts 100% Japanese Labor 100% Japanese..... this goes for any car marketed in the US.... BTW... so long as 51% of parts and labor combined can a car be called american...

No part of the Yaris was designed or manufactured (besides probably most of the bare electronic parts, LEDs, resistors, usw.) in China. Most likely, due to restrictive import laws or whatever other reason, Toyota chose to license the design to a Chinese automaker rather than export it directly, it can be much more lucrative for an automaker to do so in certain cases, depending on country and vehicle involved.

Prime example would be malaysia... the main local manufacturer there, Proton.... started out by building cars under license from Mitsubishi, basically re-branded Champs, Lancers, Colts... At least now since a few years they design their own cars.

You guys seem to think Toyota makes all the parts for these things?

Boy you guys have never worked for a major automotive manufacture have you. Toyota like GM and FORD and everyone else had hundreds of suppliers for every component in there car, Some are made by toyota but most are not, they are just made to Toyotas designs or specs. From there the cheapest of set quality is givin the contracts to produce these components.
FI system from one suppier, oil filter from another, ECU's from another everything right down to every nut and bolt is made buy suppiers. Some are Direct Toyota most are not. Some manufacturing plants are in Mexico, Asia, Europe, Canada, USA and all over the world. Then it's all shipped to toyota where they assemble the cars in their plants.

For instance Boman Canada use to make landing gear parts and engine parts for GE for Beoing before they moved overseas.

Toyota has manufacturing assembly plants in China. Not for the YARIS yet that I know of but Toyota has many other companies in China that manufacture parts for Toyota Japan.

Just because this car was not "built" there don't think for a second NO part of this car was not made in China or many other parts of Asia, Mexico, North America, etc.

They do it because it's cheaper for production. Just like GM and Ford have Plants in Canada and Mexico because it's cheaper.
FAW has been working hand in hand with Toyota for decades and is a big chunk of Toyota's manufacturing

These companies are not copy cats... Most already produce the parts for other companies in other countries, they have just been sold the rights to assemble them.

Vehicle was "Made in Japan" meaning it was assembled in Japan.

That doesn't translate to 100% manufactured and produced in Japan.
Japan doens't have the capacity to produce all the parts it needs for its own vehicles let alone vehicles for export. A majority of parts are manufactured elsewhere then imported back into Japan for assembly of vehicles.

This is why China is demanding so many commodities such as steel, fuel, and minerals.

There is no way that any vehicle we purchase today is 100% wholly manufactured in "insert country name here".

After looking at these vehicles a bit longer, that badge is Great Wall Auto. So these are almost certainly copies. Great Wall has had a long history of copying other companies products... I have no doubt that's what they're doing here, I seriously doubt a company as picky as Toyota would be convinced that Great Wall is a reliable business partner (despite the GM/Geo/NUMMI thing back in the 80's and early 90's)
