advice/help needed

hi everyone
im pretty useless when it comes to cars
im from the uk, have a 2010 yaris 1.4 diesel just under 16k miles on it

the last couple of days my oil light is coming on. i checked and there seems to be plenty of oil in it

the light seems to come on when im doing over 60mph and stays on a minute then goes off again

ive read on the net an oil light comes on when u need the oil changed, i dunno if this is what this is or something different help appreciated

Usually there is a light that comes on that says "Maint req" meaning you need an oil change, it comes on every 5k miles for my car.
I'm not sure how it works for the UK cars.

If it was saying you need an oil change I doubt it would go off right away, it would stay on until it got reset.

Might have something to do with the turbo since I believe the D4D has a turbo, and turbo's need oil.
I'm not sure though.

Oil light coming on coming on could be a number of things but my first guess would be a pressure sending unit. It could be faulty and need replacing. I am not an expert at diesels so I am not sure if its the same in diesels as in gas engines.

So what is like with a diesel Yaris? What kind of mileage do you get?

ive spoken to my dealer today and they are going to sort it out for me, its booked in for a full service on wednesday so we shall see what happens.

this is actually the 3rd yaris i have had i previously had a 1 lite petrol and a 1.3 petrol inbetween those i had a 1 litre toyota aygo. the car i had before this was a 2 litre toyota rav4. i loved my rav4 but got rid of it because of high running costs it took £65 to fill the tank in it and was filling it every 7-8 days plus the car tax was £260 a year on it and insurance higher as well

my 1.4 diesel yaris i put £45 to fill the tank it lasts me 2 full weeks (the dashboard says thats about 380 miles) the road tax is £20 a year and the insurance is cheaper. im glad ive changed and its a very nippy car

i dont understand miles to the gallon etc!!

Id like to ask you how much petrol costs and how much diesel costs in the UK?

Here in the US petrol is currently $3.30 a gallon and diesel $3.69 (in NJ) So there is no economic advantage to buying a diesel powered car.

Thanks and good luck with your car!

Tell us what happens!

it is completely different than liters/100km they use in the UK. Not to mention UK Imperial gallons and UK imperial miles are both different than US gallons and miles.

How big is your gas tank?

£45 diesel - 380miles , doesn't sound that attractive to switch over in my opinion..

Hmmmm , Today's UK per liter prices: unleaded £1.35 , diesel £1.42

so... with conversion 3.785 liters per gallon: £5.10 per US gallon unleaded and £5.37 per US gal diesel.

At today's exchange rate it takes $1.5805 to buy £1

so.. Unleaded $8.06/gal , Diesel $8.49/gal.

£45 would buy 8.38 US gallons of diesel at today's price (£45/5.37 per US gal)).

So for every 100 miles (160.9 km) traveled on that 8.28 US gallons = 12.08 US MPG.

What is the distance that you travel on that 8.28 US gallons of diesel every 2 weeks annerobinson? (i.e. 400 miles or 643.6 kilometers would = 48.32 US MPG and 300 miles or 482.7 kilometers would = 36.24 US MPG) unless my math is wrong .

With his 2010 yaris 1.4 diesel, annerobinson uses less than 4.15 US gallons a week.

my goodness thats all double dutch to me!!

ive no idea about how big my tank is, i would have to check the book for that one! and i didnt realise that UK miles are different to US miles!!

i drive approx 25 miles to work and back 5 days a week and the drive about at weekends. from my point of view i didnt particularly want a diesel but when i decided to get a different car from my rav4 it was the best car i ciould get cause my dealer did a straight swap for me.

i do know that the 1.4 diesel is alot more economical for me

where i live petrol is £1.30 a litre with diesel 1.38 gave or take a few pence even with the diesel being more expensive i spend alot less on it than i was for my rav4 doing the same miles
