Best way to stop belt from squealing at first startup?
I'm on my 3rd or 4th belt on my 2007 yaris with 125k miles on it. The problem i have is the belt squeals on cold starts. In the past i would keep tightening the belt, but then they eventually snap from the tension. Besides tightening, are there any other options to stop the belt from squealing on cold starts? Thanks

clean belt with belt dressing and toothbrush. also, overtightening belt will cause a squeal. needs to be at proper toughness. not loose, but not too tight. also check pulleys for binding/wore out-ness

wow! that's a great video. I never knew. I always have started my cars slow. I usually let it sit in the "on" position for 3-5 seconds so the fuel pump primes and computer runs checks before starting. very interesting information here...

This worked for me too
The guy on the 'Carquestions' video is exactly right, I tried what he said and no more squeal. Simple, just hold at "run" for an extra second before turning the key all the way to start.

Wife always starts right up, never had issues with her Honda for 14years.
My Echo actually did not like it once or twice, so I keep it a habit to wait a few seconds before starting. Not how you don't have a choice with push button start. :) Sent from my SM-G930W8 using Tapatalk |

Huh...ima have to try this.
Mine squeals often on start up. Nowhere near as bad in the video. Ive probably been thru 5 belts way sooner then needed. Ill have to pay attention how fast I turn the key
