Is it wierd to drive a base stickshift Yaris when there isn't a tach??
Oddly enough I've not ever had a car without a tach

You get used to using MPH instead of RPMs, plus engine sound is very good reliable way to tell when you need to shift. Good to know for future vehicles you own that might have a tach.

Use MPH to shift gears.
Upshifting gear km/h (mph) 1 to 2 24 (15) 2 to 3 64 (40) 3 to 4 75 (47) 4 to 5 87 (54) Go to page 128 of user manual for details. |

Its no big deal anyways. IDK about everyone else, but I don't really look at my tach, after I've driven the car for a while. You just know when to do what you gotta do.

Years ago I had a Sentra with no tach. As others have said, just use your MPH
as a guide, but once you get used to the sound of your engine, you won't need that, either. |

my problem is when stopped and u have music up and try to take off and u cant use the speedo for that. and u can hear engine idling and its so hard to even feel it when u rev it up if i had a tach for that it would be great.

I just listened to the engine. My yaris didn't even have a radio, so it was easy to hear when it was time to shift. ;)

Become one with your Yaris, you do not need a tach, just be aware of your car as it is aware of you.

I just listen to the engine. No big deal. When you are winding it out you can still tell when to shift.

I have a tach and I listen to the engine more than I look at it when shifting. Helps me keep my eyes on the road I guess.

It isn't "weird" to drive without one, it is just a matter of personal preference. I drove mine for a couple of months without one, and got used to it. Then, just recently, I installed a tachometer in it. I like having one and do not regret the decision to install one. If you want one, put it in. They aren't that hard to install. Once you figure out where to source the electricity, you just need figure out how you are going to route the wires. Personally, I wish manufacturers would start adding discrete holes with rubber grommets for the wiring of aftermarket stuff through the dash but as it stands you pretty much have to do it yourself.

My Yaris and previous cars have had tach's but I seldom look at them. Shift by sound and feel for the most part. Of course when new to a car it is nice to know what range you're in. Especially in quiet cars like the stock Yaris.
