I was going to suggest that it was likely a difference in the filling of the tank.

I buy my gas from a local family owned gas station. They have 10% ethenol in the 87 octane. With it I get 37.2 mpg. Their 93 octane has no ethenol in it and I get 42.7 mpg with it, however it does not perform as well as with the 87 octane. I,m also running the goodyear gas milage tires and they gave me 2.5 mpg better gas milage then the factory bridgestones.

I haven't had my 08 Yaris Sedan long, I've only filled it up twice. The first time I couldn't know how full the tank had been to start with, so I couldn't judge mileage until the second fill up. I calculated 32 mpg. Most of that was city streets, although part of my commute is on the freeway. But that freeway part is bumper-to-bumper for a long ways. It's bad, but it's generally better than the alternative routes.
Still, I ought to consider taking an alternative route more often to see if I get better gas mileage. It generally takes longer on the alternative routes, but I spend less time sitting still. |

Just finished the first 1000 miles in my Yaris TR 1.33 6-speed manual Eco drive, and I'm on 50.1 mpg just scooting around town & driving up & down the motorway. As I'm prone to going 75-85 on the M-way, and don't like dawdling in town, I'd guess a hypermiler could easily get 55-60 mpg or more - so why are everyone's figures so poor?

I think part of the difference is the use of imperial gallons (UK) vs gallons (US). Different units of measure will net different results. Also, in the US, we only have the 1.5L, no other option. Personally I just started getting better than 38mpg. I had 1 tank at 41.7 mpg, and the following at 38.2. The second of those two tanks saw a drive where she stretched her legs in order to get me to my train on time (darn running late)... And for my own knowledge, what is the "Eco drive" you mention?

My last tank was Sunoco Ultra. Never again, car ran like it was pulling a trailer or something.
I'll stick to 87 from now on....
