automatic tranny

This is not a complaint, just a curious question.Do any of the auto tranny folks find that the transmission shifts into---what seems to me---a higher than needed gear while you are going between 30--40 mph?.If that is what it does normally, then, thats what it does!.I presume it is a fuel saving measure programmed into the unit!. TIA.

Yes, mine does.
I just keep it in D3 when driving in town.

This is a common complaint and yes, it's normal. The "Cool" temp. gauge usually has to go out before it can shift into the next gear.

Thank you for da info!.

Chuck G. ................I presume you mean 3rd..the selector is kept too the left. The righthand position is 4th("overdrive").My Yaris only has 370ish miles on it and I've been experimenting with the tranny inregards to MPH etc.Not use to this vehicles rpm range yet...just seems to be laboring in 3rd when your only doing 35--40 mph?.Oh well, still a good little car!.

kinda the opposite of whats going on, but moving on....

Yes, the auto can be finicky especially coming out of left turns that go uphill. Right when you come out of the turn and need power it drops to 3. That's why I keep it in 2 til I want it in 3.

I DON'T want mine to stay in a lower gear any longer than necessary! That wastes fuel. It'll downshift if I want to poke the pedal harder. I back off on the pedal to encourage earlier upshifts.

Mine stays stuck winding out when going 30 mph and stubbornly won't kick down for awhile... I'm always afraid of giving the car a little more gas 'cause the tranny doesn't sound happy at all.

Bingo! the Yaris auto shifts appropriately to maximize fuel economy, and I notice no "bogging" because of it.

I only downshift the auto to keep the DFCO engaged as long as possible.

However, that is a problem with my Jeep due to the bigger tires. The OD kicks in at 45 MPH, which is early especially when going uphill. I simply shut it off or downshift by tapping the gas pedal when necessary. It is why all autos allow you to do so!

Cheers! M2

Depending on the throttle position, between 2000 and 2300rpm in 3rd. When cruising in "D" or overdrive gear at 40mph with constant acceleration, its around 1500 rpm. The Yaris shifts around 2000 - 2200 rpm on normal acceleration, 2600 - 3500 on WOT.

Huh? It'll wind up to about 6000 RPM on WOT. And 3500 or so on medium power.

Not when shifting from 3rd to 4th/OD. I have tested it with a scangauge at WOT on a steep incline from 40-60mph multiple times and the highest the rpms ever went in D was 4900. Of course, keep it in 3 and it will bounce of the limiter all day long.
