AM, I'm not ignoring you. I'm dealing with a serious issue that came up with the system on Sunday. This may or may not keep me from competing at world SQ championships in a few days. It all comes down to Wednesday night...

I'll fill you in on the system, it's future, after this weekend...oh, and there are NO secrets.

This is as close to a diagram as I have now:

It's okay. I know you are not ignoring me. You have been busy.
Thanks for the diagram. That is exactly what I was looking for. Great info.
Really sweet setup. I like the Audison Bitone. Total control.

Now... you know what obvious question I am going to have for you, right?

Here it comes:

WHY do you have those ridiculously OVERPOWERED surfboard S2b amps powering those L6se's and ID8's ?!?!?

Those L6se's are rated at what, 75w RMS at 4ohms ???

You must have the gain barely cracked on those amps!
Those amps could push those driver cones right out of the baskets!

If I had to guess, I would say you are running that setup because when you barely crack an overpowered amp the signal stays PURE.
You may only be using a small fraction of the amps power, but this maintains the integrity of the signal.

Am I on the right track? ( It still seems WAY overpowered to me. )

Let me know when you get your problem figured out. I hope it doesn't keep you from competing.

Good luck. I know you'll fix it.

Initial report from my test-drive:
Definitely quieter. It mellowed out the noise. Still a little road noise on the rougher roads, but nothing like it used to be, and almost silent on smooth roads. Love it.
Now here comes the strange part. This surprised me.
The system sounds crisper and punchier!
The whole system sounds "tighter". Not sure how to explain it.
The highs are extra crisp. The bass is tight and punchy. Very clean.
I'm sure all the "noise" was clouding the music, and now more of the music is coming through. I just didn't expect it to be that noticeable.
1st impression: I like it. It's a definite improvement. I'm glad it's DONE.

We'll see if my viewpoint changes as time goes on, but right now I am pleased with it.

It's ok with me AM no problem! I enjoy the activity and sharing with every body.

"Sound deadening" and "Block road noise"...

Now just imagine when the proper system to block road noise comes in place.

by adding some "roadkill" to metal you start controlling reverberation, and I see you can tell the difference, also helps for a better environment to listen music.

To block road noise with roadkill you'll need at least 3 or 4 layers to accomplish what a system of combining MLV+CCfoam+roadkill would do.

keep up the good work!

AM - Those big amps have the ability to launch any speakers I have in this system through the earth's core...

I got them for the "WOW" factor really. Control, headroom what have you. If I were to change, I'd have to sell this big boys off, I'd probably go with JL Audio's HD line of amplifiers. Prolly four 600/4 amps or seven 750/1 amps (as a last resort from JL, I might go with seven XD600/1). Arc Audio has offered to put me on their team and even though I appreciate their SE amplifiers...I'd prolly pick JL over Arc. Just a choice made by observation over these last few years of the manufacturers and their representatives.

...Tomorrow night I'll have experience over my shoulder to tell me whether I'm screwed or not. I've narrowed the issue down as specifically as I can...somewhere on the harness...this is the only thing I see holding me back from having a Yaris represent at world finals.

I agree.

I could have done more, but I really didn't want to go through all that trouble.
I just needed to give it a little help.
I am very glad I did what I did. It's good enough for me.
I had no expectations of ever making it silent. Would take too much work.

You and SQcomp went overkill on your project, but I know what you are trying to accomplish.
I didn't touch my system for two years. And now I did some Roadkill and a new subwoofer setup.
You guys never stopped working on your systems!

Last week I had the opportunity to get a Demo from a guy that was leaving to PA for the competitions down there (OHHH I was mad that I couldn't go)...

He's equipment was a 2 way active system, with MidBass in doors, Tweeters in a-pillars and a woofer in the trunk. (I'm not going in what type of speakers he has just so we don't fall in what speakers are better than others)

also he had a huge Zapco amp and a JL amp. he also had Time Alignment and digital EQ

After an hour or so of playing many tracks (his and mine) he asked me to hear my Yaris...

Long story short:

1st 10 seconds... "OMG"

after 3 or 4 tracks (previouslly played in his car)... he kept turning his head to the rear and asked me... "Are you sure you don't have speakers in the rear?" ( I don't )

after 30 minutes or so... "I'm impressed your Mids are down in the kick area and stage is up there, very impressive!"

I'm still to find out how he did at the competitions in PA

^I'm loving that post D! Now...you should be in the Amateur class in IASCA. Remember that when you hit your first show.

He's in Pro am and he's wondering about why you don't have rear fill?!? MWAHAHA!!! Look...Pro/Am is where the big boys start off.

He's in my class. Send him to me...

As for the bit one...it was nothing to do with the bit one or the deck. I was overloading the circuit with demand. I fixed that by running the amps off another circuit.

BUT

I'm still having issues. I'm unsure if it's a bad voice coil in my right mid or it's the amplifier. With that, I'm going to do a Conan the Barbarian on this problem. I'm replacing the mids AND the amplifier less than 24 hours before the show...in Redding.

I'm gonna beat this problem! I'm going to have my boys around to help too...

Yeah, that makes sense.

JL HD line is what all the rich kids use.

AM...

JL HD...Expensive? Not hardly. Although I know some things that make JL a little more affordable.

^This is expensive. Think $42,000 in those three amplifiers...

When compared to other high-quality units out there, true.
I have never used a JL amp, but everything I heard about them is all positive.
Spec-wise, they look great on paper.
If I were going to build a SQ system, I would certainly look into running them.

Hehehehe!

Those are the DiLithium Matrix controllers from the USS Enterprise, right?
Commander LaForge let you photograph them?

Seriously, those are Audison Thesis with custom LED lighting?

$42k? Really?

Those are indeed the Thesis Venti amplifiers. IIRC, they're $14k a piece at MAP. The dealers get them on 50% accomodation once per year (it's a special program). If I had money to burn, I'd think about them on accomodation through the shop.

I've got another project over the next several years that will be a good bit more exciting and rewarding than just playing with exotic amplifiers. Hopefully I get put on another deployment...that'll help pay for it REALLY quickly.

Oh...and I fixed my issue. It was an unfortunate palm to forhead that figures type of situation.

Dood! WTF!

Murphy's Law rules the day. Things just took a turn for the worse BEFORE the show!!! The Bit One completely died on the right side AS Scott Buwalda was listening to the car. We had the car phase perfect too and were going to start EQing. This forced me to remove the seats, carpet, re run the wiring from the back and start completely over on the P-01..less than 12 hours before the show.

I'll keep you guys in the know.

I've already started planning for next year. These audio demons need to go away...
