High mile Yaris?
Hey guys, new on here and was thinking of getting a Yaris. I need a point A to B car with some options like power doors/windows and the Yaris seems to have it. I just want a cheap [fuel wise] reliable car, nothing else.
I just spotted a 2006, base model, with about 100K miles on or 160K KMs. Asking price is 4, 500$. I'm not sure if it's a good price but I'm wondering, past that mileage, what should I be worried about? I know it uses a timing chain and not a belt... anything else I should know? What can I expect to break at this mileage or recommended maintenance? Basically any input is appreciated. I'm also looking at more recent ones like '09s for 9000$ but I don't quite like depreciation. |

I've got an '06 with 166K on her. Not expecting anything to break. I did however have to replace the alternator due to an issue with the voltage regulator on the '06-'07 model years.

I bought a 2007 Yaris RS 3 Dr model about 5 months ago in Canada as well (I paid also 4500$) .. and have had no problems. It also had 162,000 KM on it .. and the only problem the car has ever had is that the water pump was replaced under warranty. I don't expect to have any problems and the car just runs and runs. So overall I would be confident that your Yaris would give you many years of reliable service.

That is a killer deal. make it sweeter by talking down to 4200.
There may be issues but nothing is overly hard or expensive to fix. Even if you have to put a few hundred in it, you will be spending less than 5k for a car with a lot of life left. Do check the tranny fluid if it's an auto. If it is black or smells burning I'd pass. If it's a manual fell out the clutch and work it to check for slipping. Make sure all gears are smooth. There should only be problems if it was abused BTW. I don't hear of transmissions just going out on these cars. Same with the motor. It will need spark plugs at that mileage if they haven't been replaced yet. Depending on the replacement intervals, the belt may need replaced. Go for it! |

I bought my 2007 Yaris brand new on April 1st, 2006. It now has 120,000 miles. The only thing I had to do was replace the alternator due to the voltage regulator issue previously mentioned. This occurred relatively early. Around 50,000 miles. Apparently, that is the only issue with these cars I am aware of.
Oh, back to the alternator. I went to the Toyota garage. They said an alternator would cost.......get this....................$750. I more or less said, "you're frickin' nuts!" and left. I bought an alternator online for $90 and put it on myself. Problem solved without going to a rip-off dealership garage. Avoid them unless absolutely necessary. |

Mines at 150,000 miles and I've only changed the waterpump and battery (along with your usual wear n tear like tires, etc....I had original brakes up until about 140,000!)

After reading the various forum threads, now I am paranoid about the water pump and/or serpentine belt. My 120,000 mile Yaris still has the original belt. I spray it with dressing every oil change, but I have not replaced it yet. It still looks good. How difficult is the belt to replace?. It looks tough.
