2010 higher mileage or 2008 lower mileage?
Been a member here for a while but never bought my Yaris. Kind of chickened out last fall and got a different car, but the Yaris attraction never went away. Now I'm getting more serious about getting one again.
Have two cars in mind right now, both listed for about the same price. NADA on each is very close. Both are the same color, both have the same power package and split rear seat (which is important to me), but one is a 2010 with about 75k miles and one is a 2008 with about 54k miles. History report on both looks good. Which would you choose? In the past I'd probably have gone for the lower miles, but my inclination here is actually to go for the 2010, mainly because I like the tach (manual transmission) and prefer the 2010's different upholstery. Plus I need to add cruise and from what I've read here it's easier on the 2010. Am I off base? Which would you choose? |

I'd go manual trans. If they were both manual trans, I'd go 2008.
My dad had a 2007 or 2008 and it was faster than my 2010 (both manual trans sedans). I think the 2010 has a more conservative tune to be damn sure there is no sudden acceleration ....un-intended or not. |

I thought adding cruise was the same regardless. I have a 2008 and have added both cruise and a tach and they were both relatively simple.
You may want to get with CTscott on the cruise thing as his walkthrough is amazing... truly amazing. It took a while but it wasn't hard on my 2008. I spent most of the time making sure wires were hidden and it looked right. I am biased to the 2008 as I like the styling of that year. Miles wouldn't scare me nor would age. All around, either car would be a good one. |

I would go with the 2010. Miles are nothing on these cars. Better to go with the newer, slightly updated car with less environmental wear on it. Plus, more miles driven in a shorter time period is usually better. It likely means more highway miles vs. more city miles that are likely on the '08.

I too would go with the 2010.
It would probably have the "good" control arm bolts and I believe they had sorted the waterpump issues by then. ;) |

Manual transmission can yield anywhere from 3-15 mpg difference if driven carefully. But yes, the resale issue may come up if you plan to keep it for under ten years. The manual transmission also requires much less maintenance and will be easier to fix if you do have issues down the road.

I'd go with the 2010, no question about it. I don't consider 75k miles as high mileage, especially on a car like these. And I too like the 2010 upholstery better and would love to have a factory tach.

Thanks, guys. Hadn't even heard about the waterpump or control arm bolt issues, so that helps, too.
The '08 was sold shortly after I posted this but the 2010 is still around, and it's the one I favored anyway. The '10 is a long way from me and still a bit overpriced so I'll see how it works out. BTW, guess I wasn't clear but the M/T is mandatory! Have never owned an A/T car and hope I never do. :) |

Bottom line with mpg is really how you drive the damned thing nowadays. Personally I have been in several slushbox Yarii and I have found all of them to be real dogs compared to the stick version and that is comparing them non-boosted. The only gripe that I have with the C50 is the apparent synchro issue or whatever it is that is causing them to wear out early even with a stock motor if you use it spirited. There have been several folks now that have indicated an issue with shifting either into 1st, 2nd, or 3rd after a while. I began experiencing the problem around 28k miles. I am actually working on smooth talking my old tech school instructor to take my old C50 into the shop for the senior class to dismantle and really take a look at what the guts appear to be like now. When I removed it after only roughly 80k I was pretty much having to force it into 3rd gear and many times I would have to actually shift to 2nd before 1st. I ran 30k boosted of the 80k.
Really in the long run unless you are a struggling individual financially getting an extra 2-3mpg to me is just obsessing when you also compare it to how much more time over the duration you are taking getting from point A to B. Now if fuel goes up over 5 bucks a gallon then sure those extra miles per tank to me might be worth it, but I would love to see someone instead track all of the minutes/hours/days they lose each year working all these tweaks to squeeze out those extra few mpg. Other than that I think that a lot of folks just love trying to have bragging rights on what their FE is in their ride. It becomes a game, but once again moreso an obsession in my book. I only track as of the last couple years my mpg when I am driving to client sites or to the airport that is 200 miles away merely to keep myself in check because the mileage stipend is free cash in the pocket. At any rate, I would still go with a stick any day of the week over the slushbox, but creature comforts inside the vehicle are also important too especially if you spend many hours a week in your ride.

It's fun trying to get the best tank . $3.85+ a gallon does have an impact on many . Plus , if someone is thinking of purchasing a new or used YARIS they may see what the Yaris is capable of getting for gas mileage .
