I've been driving and owning cars a long, long time. Cars of the 1970s did NOT hold up, no matter HOW well you cared for them. With exceptions, of course; but it was rare to see 100,000 miles in one.

One Chevrolet I had had a connecting rod let go at 35,000 miles. That was the Grate GM Feeling of the time. Fords...on a quiet night you could hear your Ford rust, what with all the cheap recycled steel used in them. A five-year-old Ford was an old Ford.

It was the Japanese, led by Toyota, which shifted the paradigm. The first Japanese cars sold here, rusted horribly...but instead of giggling about increased future sales, as Ford and GM did, the Japanese engineers got to work to SOLVE the problem. And they did; and with it they applied superior engineering to their drivetrains.

It was not a secret making an engine last for decades or hundreds of thousands of hours - tractors last a lifetime with only basic care. But the American companies would NOT put that sort of engineering into their CARS.

Until Toyota and other Japanese companies did.

My first was a 1986 celica GT. I knew next to nothing about Toyota quality or that I would become a lifetime customer. That was just a great looking car and the most affordable used car on the lot. It was 10 years old and thrived another 8 years with just basic maintenance, until its tenacious enemy RUST prevailed. It still holds a fond place in my heart as one of my very favorite automobiles, amongst ALL cars I've driven in, whether I actually owned or not.

To replace the celica, of course I was staying with Toyota forever and not looking back, and found one of my favorite car deals ever...an 88 Camry with 104,000 miles for $900! It was built like a tank and I have NO doubt that I'd still have it were it not for a very bad car accident that took it out of commission!

My consolation for that loss came with a similar deal price-wise with a 1992 Corolla. Had a few more miles...120,000, but still only $900! When Rust reared its ugly head again, I lucked into my VERY BEST deal financially-- a 1995 Tercel owned by the stereotypical little old lady who didn't drive much. Though I've heard wives tales about such cars I had never come across one before! It had a little over 30,000 miles and cost only $1200!

The current Toyota I have breaks the trend of crazy-price-deals, but I felt like I wanted something newer for once. That quest brought me to my 2010 Yaris LB, which I love. There are things I wasn't even expecting or looking for that I now would hate to live without: The raised seating, "upper" side cup holders, and the whole center layout. The dash is just perfect for me because I always looked at the center clock on the tercel anyway. Now I get all my info in a nice big, easy-to-see format. Plus I know with Toyota reliability, I can own this great vehicle until *I'm* the one selling it for a crazy low price... :)

wife drives a 2011 highlander 4 cylinder. it gets about 24-25 mpg. great mpg for a vehicle of this size.

Back in the day when the USD/CND exchange was so messed up...I could have bought an Echo hatch for about $7000 American. I was at a Toy dealer in Niagara Falls, Ontario, working out the minutia about how I could buy it and export it to the States.

It was simpler than it seems, since safety and emissions were the same. I could live with the KpH speedo and there was no requirement that the speedometer be with only MPH on an imported car. The big questions were financing and warranty - I could charge the amount on my MasterCard but that twenty-percent interest would be killer.

Warranty: I got blithe assurance from the Canuck dealer that Toyota would honor the warranty worldwide. I've since learned that that's not necessarily so; often times the Americans don't have access even to tech data on world-market products.

It all fell through, though...for a long and embarrassing incident. First I got tagged for a random check on the Peace Bridge - and it came out that I had a DWI 22 years earlier. IMMEDIATE deportation - do not pass Go, to not collect $200.

While I was trying to sort out my new status as an International Criminal, work went to hell. Thank GOD I didn't have a $7000 charge on my plastic.

So I didn't get a Canuk Echo. In the end I got two Yarii instead, over time. I think, even though it cost more and didn't have the rarity value, I did better.

My mom had a '81 corolla 1.8 with a 5-speed, first car I drove with a manual in the parking lot. When it came time to drive a year later she gave me the '71 Ford Galaxie over the rolla since I was a new driver and she felt I would be safer. The rolla had been repainted poop brown from light brown so the galaxie was preferred and I still have it.

Drove it for over 3 years before selling it for $200 to a guy who was even uglier than the car and had food in his beard. Loved that little car as I seriously beat the crap out of it and did a lot of off-road hill climbs and rally-style driving on the dirt roads. Plus people would go out of the way NOT to park next to me

I've had:
1992 hilux, 2wd converted to 4x4 with a 7mge swap done at the same time and tossed some 35" tire on it
1992 hilux surf ssr-g, engine took a shit so it got swapped with a 7m as well
1992 corolla, it was given to me by someone that didn't want it. drove it for a little over a year and gave it to the EOD guys at work to blow up.
1991 cressida, bought it for the engine and drove it around for a week, then stripped everything i needed out of it
1983 hilux 4x4, bought it for the axles and transfer case
1980 hilux 4x4, it was super cheap so i picked it up for parts
2007 yaris rs, bought it to drive 30km to work every day and 600km every weekend to see my fiancee.
I still own the 92 hilux and surf and the 07 yaris
