My car got totaled
Got rear-ended today on an off ramp, which pushed my car into the truck in front of me. heavy damage front and rear, including frame rail next to engine and A pillar, and I know once a windshield pillar is badly damaged it won't be fixed. All I can do now is wait for the insurance people to tell me what they'll give me for it. I hope it's a realistic amount that I can use as a downpayment on a new car. Photos soon.

Sorry to hear. Glad that you're OK. Sucks but cars can be replaced, humans not so much.

Ugh, that's a bummer!
+1 on you being okay, that's all that really matters. I feel like a number of Yarii on this site have gotten wiped out recently. I'm going to leave mine in the garage until this trend blows over lol. |

It was a low speed hit (aprox 15-20 mph) and the rear bumper absorbed the shock very well. No crack, just 2 small deformations. It did however push the car almost half-way in the intersection since I wasn't hard on the brakes. With some quick reactions I was able to safely clear the intersection...but man was that ever scary...

2010 three door hatch - Meteorite Metallic. "Silver" to non-Yaris people.

Not sure. Depends on what insurance gives me. I may be able to pay cash for a good used one like mine (if I can find one). But the money they give me could be a good down-payment on a car that's much better than a yaris, with more features, and I can perhaps get a lower payment than I had on the Yaris. We'll see.

Yes, I suppose. My car was a base model, but I'd want power stuff on the next car. Again, we'll see what insurance does first. I'm going window shopping for cars later today.

One of my better half's co-workers was involved in a collision last weekend in where she was hit by someone texting and driving, causing her to roll 3 times. Her and her husband walked away from it, but swear to the side curtain airbags having saved their lives. She urged my better half and the rest of her co-workers to consider getting a car with them if they didn't already have them.
I've never given a ton of thought to the lack of certain features in my Yaris, such as ABS, side airbags, etc., but I'd be lying if hearing about this incident didn't get me thinking a little more about it. After all, the Yaris is already smaller than just about anything on the road that might run into it. There are people that commute on motorcyles - so to some degree it's just fate and the luck of the draw. Nevertheless, my better half and I are toying with the idea of getting me a replacement. I'm on the fence because I really like my car and I like not having the monthly payment, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't absolutely love a new Focus RS, Civic SI/Type R, or Accord Sport. Would be great if you updated this thread with your impressions of any cars you take a serious look at and/or test drive. |

I work for a major rental car company; I've driven everything there is to drive. I'm partial -right now - to a Hyundai Elantra GT; it's the 5 door hatch. The good thing is, it's not just a 5-door version of the sedan, it's an entirely different car. Drives really nice, good power, lots of room, loads of equipment. And I really like the looks of the thing.

I did like the Genesis Coupe and more recently the Velosters have caught my eye. Still tepid on them, but the price and warranty is hard to deny. |

Even since '11, they've made very good advances in fit and finish. The GT has much more hp than the sedan, which helps a lot. Now, is it as good as a Golf, or Mazda 3? No. However the price is right for me, as is all the standard equipment. I'm thinking that a Golf with the GT's amount of equipment would be maybe several thousand more. Now, I know that that speaks of the hyundai's resale value, but if I keep it a long time (as I wanted to do with the Yaris), it doesn't matter to me.

My neighbor bought in Hyundai for his daughter. It's been in the shop three times. Plus it makes noises that make him nervous.
Personally the price would have to be half of a Yaris before I'd buy one. If my 09 dies before I do I d buy a used one.
