I just purchased a used 2013 Yaris Hatchback LE.
I wanted to install an engine block heater and after doing some some reading a found out that new Toyota engines have a molded socket on the engine block specifically for a tube type engine heater. The only problem is I can find the damn hole! Even the guy at the Toyota dealership said he'd never heard of that and recommended getting an oil dipstick type heater. It probably doesn't help that I live in North Alabama where engine heaters aren't common. Has anyone installed one that can direct me where to find the socket to install my heater? |

It's on the firewall side of the engine block on the drivers side. I found it helpful to remove the battery. It's down pretty low.
Keep trying! Livin in Bama an you need a bhp

Just Google "block heater install yaris world" there was a thread about it w/ pics.
It's not hard to do but if you have a m/t you'll need to remove the shift bracket and cables to access the hole. For an a/t you don't need to move anything. Cory's pics is correct. Keep in mins the hole access is on the drivers side of the engine right at the back

After more searching referencing the posted pictures I finally found the socket and installed my heater!
I never would have found it without removing the battery. I wasn't able to find any posts with pictures so I'm posting mine to help out others. The small orange piece of rubber is the electrical plug to the heater. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Short version: the hole is there, but it’s a pain to find, and it’s not obvious at all on a 2013 Yaris. On the 2013 Yaris (1.5L 1NZ-FE), the factory block heater is a freeze-plug style heater, not a dipstick or screw-in type. The port is on the back side of the engine block, toward the driver’s side, near where the engine mates to the transmission. You won’t see it from the front, and you usually can’t see it from above either. A few real-world notes from people who’ve installed them: You usually have to feel for it by hand, using a flashlight and reaching down behind the engine. If your car never had a block heater installed, the hole will just have a metal plug in it — nothing labeled, nothing obvious. Access is tight. Some people remove the intake tubing or reach from underneath. Dealers in warm states often have no clue, because Toyota mostly sold block heaters as cold-weather options. Also important: not every Yaris block is actually machined for the heater, depending on market and build. If you genuinely can’t find the port after checking the back/driver side of the block, it’s possible your engine simply doesn’t have it. If that’s the case, skip the dipstick heater — they’re pretty ineffective. A better alternative is: a lower radiator hose heater, or an oil pan pad heater Those work well even in mild winters like North Alabama. Bottom line: You’re looking in the wrong place if you’re checking the front or oil pan area. Check behind the engine, driver’s side, near the transmission, mostly by feel. If it’s not there, your engine likely wasn’t cast for it, and an external heater is the way to go Last edited by 233bambucha; 01-31-2026 at 10:11 AM. |

Here are pics I found online a few years ago to try to show where the heater hole is. A back side of block shot minus the exhaust manifold showing the bulge of the heater recess. And a flywheel end shot of an XA block showing the hole end-on. Hope they help! Nice to see actual Yaris content once in a while!
