the springs themselves are relatively cheap at $150-$225. this is also a mod that you can do yourself with basic hand tools and one specialty tool (that you can BORROW from advance via loan-a-tool program).
not everyone is confident enough to do it themselves and thus the labor charge to have them put on.

Um, you have to have it up on a LIFT to do this; not just a car jack... Not all of us GURLS have car lifts in our garage, nor the tools, nor the requisite skills.
Nor the desire, for that matter.
Seriously, I wouldn't widely recommend this as a DIY job; it looked quite complicated, at least in the front, when the mechanic walked me around.
Estimated four hours of labor. FORGETABOUTIT. But I do think it's a "fail" for Toyota. The last mechanic remarked, "It does ride high, doesn't it???"
