Your friend in Portland is correct about Seattle and the outlying areas. It is a beautiful city, there is no part of the city that I would not go at 2am and walk down a dark alley. The people are very docile. Maybe cuz they're baked all the time I don't know. There are little boys and there are men that look like women. As a matter of fact there are many women that are much more manly than your average male.
It is a strange place, different. The cost of living is ridiculous. The drug problem is a disaster. And the bums and heroin addicts are out of control. And yes the traffic is a freaking joke. It rains and it's depressing that's true too.
The state of Washington is an absolutely amazing and beautiful place with some of the most wonderful things to see. If you're an outdoor enthusiast it's a 1/4 place because of the diversity of the environment. You can go from the ocean to the rainforest to the temperate climate to the Mount top of the snow capped mountains and back down to the dry desert floor all in about a hundred miles.
The place is wonderful. It's mostly the people I could do without.
