I had missed this above:

"I did check the extra switch with the meter before doing the swap and they were ok (0 resistance when unpressed, high value (1) when pressed)... "

This indicates that the switches are the wrong type. They are normally closed, rather than normally open switches. Unpressed should be high resistance and pressed 0 resistance.
