87 octane or the recommended gas in your manual.

Use the recommended gas. The car is timed for the slower burning octane. The higher octane burns at a higher temp and in the long run will start causing that famous knocking noise in your engine. Sparkplugs and everything else will start feeling the pain of the higher heat and quicker burn, slowly but surely over time. Maybe once or twice a year you can run the higher octane to make you think you’re cleaning it out but it really don’t matter. Toyota did not design the engine to need all those extra additives that they put in the higher octane fuel. You’re wasting money for higher octane. Get the cheap stuff and keep more of your money in your pocket, Toyota recommends it! And your car will thank you for it.
