wheel bearings?

I have a Yaris with only 31,000 miles. I have had a loud noise coming from rear of car. took it mechanic said it it sounds like bad wheel bearings? really? i thought bearings lasted a lot longer. anyone else have this problem of loud, droning rear end noise?
