Just checked current new car prices for Yaris in Australia via "Wheels" magazine.
Prices range from AD$14990 for 1.3L, 3 door, manual YR to AD$18990 for 1.5L, auto YRS 5 door hatch. These are all "list" prices, minus on road costs, and better deals are available especially at the end of June. What I do see, though, is good resale prices for used Yaris.
You would certainly be able to get something like a YRS 5 door hatch with auto on the road for less than AD$20000. This is comparable with Mazda 2 and similar size cars.
The next class of car, Ford Mondeo, Mazda 3, Holden Cruise etc are generally sub
$30000 on the road.
It is all relative though as our dollar is generally higher that the USD and is buying 94 of your cents today.

Hmm. Maybe with all the taxes, I seem to think every Australian Yaris member I have seen on here has quoted around $24k or so. Of course as you say that might have been in the past and prices might have changed with the currency valuations.
