Got around to an elegant solution. With my 1000w power inverter running off a group 27 deep cycle battery, with a parallel switch on a timer relay activated by my remote starter for the inverter, I bought a 750w Vornado personal space heater which I position on the floor in front of the front passenger seat, aiming to the center console, and plugged into the inverter. So far even at -7° C, running for only 5 minutes, the car is already cozy. Draw about 10% off my secondary battery per 5 minutes of use, which is being recharged later on the road when the engine is warmed up. It won't defrost the car, but it's terribly effective at warming up the cabin space in a very short time.
