I just read a note concerning the filter causing possible cooling problema in certain vehicles as ToyotaTEch21 mentioned. It looks like they where designed for it in the begining, but issues resulted in them not being used. I can understand them not changing the component design just to reflect lack of filter. If they had done so then the cost would simply have been passed on to us in the end.
