It must be the new manual trannys, but in all the manuals I've ever done, I just used a normal motor oil like Mobil-1 10W-30. They all shifted like a dream! 75W-90 is some thick stuff. I wonder why it needs to be so thick?

I too am looking to go to AMsoil 75W-90, I did find these two topics on the Scions. At least they are a starting point on what to do if you need a visual reference.

Here is another topic from Scionlife with lots of info on changing the manual tranny fluid as well as info on particular gear oil to use.

They also happened to specify that for the engine itself as an option in climates that didn't get below 20F/-7C, so on my '86 Civic I had straight 30W oil in the entire vehicle.

Hell, old 3rd-gen Civic manual transmissions recommended 30W engine oil in the transmission, and the engine if you lived in temperate and mild climates. Made it insanely-cheap to just change all the fluids every oil change, since 30W is just about bottom-barrel for price.
