Don't know what kind of manuals you drove but every manual I know of either takes gear lube (75w-90, 75w-140, etc), or many mazda/ford manual trannys actually take ATF.

I just changed mine to Amsoil as well, after I got my car up on ramps and saw the large fill and drain plugs plainly labled "see owners manual before refilling"... it was a simple job with the beer bong funnel to fill her up...

Syncromesh Friction Modified sell by GM for manual Corvette transmissions will help having smoother gear shifting after a while

3rd-gen Civic manual transmissions specified 30W engine-oil for the transmission, actually. Not 10W-30, 30W. And not gear oil, motor oil. Single-grade motor oil, in a transmission. Still want one of those again.

They also happened to specify that for the engine itself as an option in climates that didn't get below 20F/-7C, so on my '86 Civic I had straight 30W oil in the entire vehicle.
