this could have came loose or tore . This stretches so exhaust can move some with the road conditions ( bumps , etc. ) . It slips on two metal rods , 1 attached ( welded ) to undercarriage and the other welded to muffler itself . This was an issue with our 2000 Chevy PRIZM ( Corolla ) . Overtime the rubber grommmet weakens from the elements and stretches from the torture of pour roads . The grommet had weakened so much that the muffler would move up and down from rough surfaces or bumps , thus the tailpipe would hit on the rear plastic bumper

. To test this , grab tailpipe and move up and down to see the play in it , if hits the bumper , that could be the culprit . This is a very expensive item , think I was quoted at about $150

! So , we decided to just deal with it . GOOD LUCK
