Friend of mine used to live in Texas, where basically everyone carries a gun with them. He told me because of this, crime isn't as rampant as other areas of the country. Criminals will think twice about trying to mug someone with their gun when the person they're mugging probably has a gun of their own.
I don't own a gun myself, nor would I personally want to carry one, but real world experiences show that if everyone had a gun, crime would no doubt be lower. If someone really wants a gun, they're going to get one either legally or illegally. If you don't let law-abiding citizens who will own guns responsibly get them, then the only people with guns will be the criminals.
