This "stupid" idea lowers your maintenance costs long term. I fail to see how in anyway this could be construed to be a safety issue of any kind. A major safety issue in my opinion is something like the fuel tank in the Ford Pinto. Not an feature which forces the engine to be warm before shifting like it would under optimal temperatures.
It's also better to drive the car slowly as soon as you start it versus idling. Better for fuel efficiency and better for the maintenance of your car.
Seems like you hate a lot of things about your Yaris. I suggest you research and test something better before you buy it next time. Sure, the Yaris is far from perfect and some things about it annoy me (The warm up feature which prevents proper shifting until a proper engine temp is reach, included), but the Yaris is a great car for what it was intended to do.
